Growing my hair out this time has not been a problem, the whole awkward stage didn't really happen. Some days were worse than others but on those I just wore a hat. Since I realized that the kind of curly thick hair I have can't be treated the same way as other peoples it has been looking great. I haven't used shampoo in almost 2 months, I don't plan to ever again really, I see no need for it. For my hair type it strips the oils totally off leaving the outer layers frizzy and poofing/flying around while the under layers remain greasy. So I decided to just shampooing. The first 2 weeks were the worse because since my scalp was still used to being shampooed (2x a week) the oil was being produced really fast. I just kept washing my hair with hot water to disperse the oil across the entire length of hair, conditioning, then rinsing out in cold water. Now my hair is not dry and it doesn't get oily from not shampooing. As a comparison... I linked a picture of how my hair looked the first time I grew it out when I was 16, treating it the same way I treated my short hair: shampooing every day or every other day. Oh and then I would blow dry it ...... how stupid.
Forgot to mention that I've taken to pushing my hair back while its wet instead of letting it dry "down" or flat over my face. The bangs can stay behind my ears now and people say it makes me look "more presentable".
Hi Helgast,
Your hair just keeps getting better and better all the time, and I am amazed that you have come this far in only 15 months fromm bald. Your hair grows FAST, and those curls are so thick and healthy, and look fabulous.
Keep it growing,
David
wowza!!!! Now that is what I call THICKK! Your hair looks great man. It has made awesome progress for only a year and a couple of months. It seems to grow pretty fast. I'm really glad you decided to grow it out again because long hair looks excellent on you. Keep it growing and take care.
Hey helgast good to hear from you. Looking fantastic there dude! I am glad the no shampoo is working for you. I still wash and shampoo mine daily because it gets so greasy otherwise. I have always wondered how my hair might look if I tried that no shampoo thing but I haven't tried it yet. I had heard here once before that the scalp does make less oil after awhile if you don't shampoo the oil away all the time, but I wasn't sure if that were true. Thanks for the info
Wow, great hair. It is so thick and healthy. Very inspiring to a new guy on this board. Like me, you are another grower that started from a skinned scalp. I'm gonna try the no shampoo routine for a while, my hair is dry, curly and thick too. Thanks for the nifty pictures.I especially like the animated GIF.
Keep growing!
Don
Now thats some good lookin' hair!
Your brother in waviness,
Allen
perfect. Ditching the shampoo works very well for you. My beard hair is similar and I stopped using shampoo on it. It looks so much better than before. It is even and not lumpy or poofy like before. Stick with the warm water only routine, it works very well for you.
Scott
Looks great.....you are an inspiration to curly heads !!
Thanks for Sharing

Hey Helgast fantastic progress to date!!Gotta hand it to you as you can really grow out some terrific hair when you put your mind to it.Also like the time lapse scolling pics from shaved head to presant as wouldn't it be great if hair grew that fast in real life!LOL.Mark
The longer it gets, the better it gets. Such nice and thick chestnut curls.
Carol
Your hair looks simply wonderful. It's so thick and curly, so full of life. Your routine really seems to be doing the trick. I love the comparison photo from when you were 16. What a difference the proper care can make.
Keep it growing, and I'm so glad you're enjoying your mane.

Looks real good Helgast! You've learned something with growing your hair long twice...awkward is a state of mind. All the things you worry about the first time round seem to disappear or, as I say, become gentle reminders that you're on your way to long hair.
Keep on growin'
Bruce
You cant ask for anything more when growing out your hair then what you have. Perfect hair and I'm glad you found a routine that works great for your hair.
peace
Your hair is looking great. Your curls seem a lot like mine.
Well your regime seems to be working Helgast, your hair looks exactly as it should - shiny, healthy and natural. I do the same, I never use shampoo.
Cheers Dave
Wow, Helgast. From a sahved head to great mane - what a nice slideshow!
I notice you and I have very similar hair texture, so I am, of course, biased in thinking that your hair looks just Faaantastic!
Great growth. Keep on going: I know I look forward to the bullk of the hair (the poofiest section) finally reaching down between my shoulders when dry. (So what have we got...another year and a half? Awesome!)
Take care and thanks for posting.
Shawn
Thanks for all the feedback guys =] Also wanna mention, I used to have a problem with dandruff, I bought the head and shoulders junk but it only made my hair more dry and scalp still itchy and dry. Once I stopped using shampoo the dandruff stopped, the oilyness of the scalp leveled out on its own. The only thing now that I don't really mind but some might is when itching my scalp sometimes there is a waxy build up under my nails. I don't know if this is bad or not but it hasn't been a problem for me really.
For those with curly hair, what I've found that really makes the hair look great is ice cold thorough rinses of the hair after you're finished showering, for some reason my hair is much shinier on the days I use the cold water.
After that I run some infusium 23 through my hair, works great to smooth out tangles, and leaves your hair light and soft. I never use combs or brushes, not with this type of hair, it would make my hair puffy and ruin the curls. So just some finger combing when still wet after a shower.
Your hair looks so much healthier this time. I agree that your hair looks better pushed back, you even look like you could get a modeling job. :-)
Great hair!
I too have the curly & thick hair ... I have been contemplating stopping the shampooing as well ... Thanks for the advice and tips with yours as I probably will now give it a try..
Keep up your great work and see ya around..
Tristan

Good to have you back Helgast!
