...here's why.
My answers follow Luckskind's questions:
...The longer it gets are you:
A. Happier?
YES
B. Do you enjoy the new, longer length?
It's a part of me now as I've been growing my hair the 2nd time around for nearly 4 years now.
Occasionally frustrations like tangles but 90% of the time...yes
C. Do you like the way the longer hair makes you feel?
In a ponytail i feel great as I've always thought that nothing looked better than that, but when it's down I also feel great.
D. Are you feeling more or less comfortable with each new inch of growth?
THIS is my problem (ergo 'sad') I am not sure, maybe my hair has been in a dormant cycle for a while, maybe the growth will kick back up again, but:
- My hair growth seems to have slowed to a crawl
- My hair is getting very very thin towards the end (NOT due to split ends) as only a small proportion of hairs are making it to my longest lengths.
- My hair has lightened considerably since 2004, especially towards the mid-lengths and ends. COMBINED with the fact that my hair can get a little frizzy at times + the aforementioned thinness, and soemtimes my hair looks quite crap to be honest.
especially when out as 9/10 times my hair looks good in a ponytail as all the hair clumps togetehr that way.
All I want is to have *LONG* top to bottom/ends hair!!!
Is this possible?
Will this ever eventuate??-I am at 44 months of hairgrowth (& while I haven't treated my hair like silk I have tried to treat it well all these years...but I'm not feeling 'bang for my buck' and haven't for a while actualy)
Hope all is well with evrybody.
(Chris, I think Bill's advice is v.good)
Hi Dean,
It's great to see you back again on the hyperboard, and I hope that things are going OK with you.
I am sorry that you are frustrated by apparent slow growth, and the fear that you may be close to terminal length. I feel the same way sometimes, when I realize that my hair is neither as thick or as fast growing as some other guys.
As an example, a guy in my golf foursome started growing his hair about 22 months ago, in December 2005. He has straight hair that grows fast, and he is already near mid back, so waist length will be easily attainable for him. I am at 42 months, and a bit envious of his growth rate, as he has already caught me, with half the growing time that I have! (I have been growing for 42 months) I remember a similar post you made to the hyperboard last fall, when you went to the gym and saw a guy who had a straight, mid back length ponytail. It is all too easy to envy that which you do not have.
However, I realize that not everyone will be able to grow hair to their waist, and that I have to be content with what I have right now. My hair IS still growing, albeit slowly, and don't know if waist length is in the cards, but I am certainly trying my best.
The important thing is that YOU are happy with whatever length Mother Nature decides to give you in the end, and that you enjoy your long hair, as it appears you do.
Take care,
David
...for your message David, it was kind and made me feel better about this. It was also thoughtful as always (e.g. remembering that post of mine, it reminded me that I have actually been concerned about this for a while)
All the best to you Sir.
Won't have much choice will I? But if it does turn out that I am near terminal with hairlength, then yes, I'll follow this advice :)
Did you get a trim during those 44 months ?
If no, this would certainly help...
I've had 4 trims + a snip off of the ends when my hair was braided rcently
The fact that I've done this just adds to my frustration. But thanks anyway for the response :)
My hair is at mid back for me (Concidering I'm a teenager, it might look shorter on an adult) and mine grows a bit slower than others too, and I haven't really gotten a trim in almost a year, so that could be the reason your's is thinning at the bottom and growing slower.
Hey Dean,
There is both good news and bad news that I see in your post. The bad news is that your hair is not hell-bent on becoming what you had imagined for it. The good news is that if you've reached terminal, "you have arrived"!
You say you have no split ends, etc., so it sounds like you've reached terminal. You don't have to worry about hair care products or routines because what you are doing now works throughout the lifespan of your hair. You don't have to fret about growth because you aren't going to get any more. At last you have nothing to worry about at all, and you can just enjoy your hair!
Bill
Still not 100% convinced that I have yet Bill, but if i have...your words and the perspective you gave me in your response was very very encouraging!
So thank you!
And it goes directly to what I was saying in my original message ie. that I am not going to cut my hair just because I've reached terminal, implied by my responses to Luckskind's questions.
thanks again for this persepctive :-)
it may seem like it has stopped growing but remember that the longer it gets, the smaller percentage of lengh each new inch is, i.e. if it's two feet long, an additional 2 months of growth probably won't be noticable so there will be this illusion of it no longer growing. If it's that long it may take 6 to 12 months for any new growth to make a difference. I think the hardest thing about growing out hair is patience.
But you know, I've wondered about the reverse--what if we could take a pill and overnight go from 2 inch hair to waist length? it may seem great but the truth is that we'd probably be miserable because we wouldn't have any idea how to cope with it; it would drive us nuts and we'd probably get it cut. It might even be dangerous because we wouldn't know how to be safe with it. We'd peer into a running motor and let it pull us into a fan belt. In other words, the slow growth also allows us time to grow into it and learn how to deal with it.
Interesting point indeed there Rob... but I still occasionally get my hair caught in the car door!
(although mainly i full agree with you...e.g it took me almost 2 weeks to get used to 'the new me' (literally!) when I had my hair all cut off the first time in Sep.2003-after 2.5 growth back then)
Hey Dean good to see you posting here but sorry it's not a happy hair boast post.
I don't know enough about terminal length to conjecture as others here have. If you are near terminal I hope that can enjoy what you do have cause all your pictures looked fabulous to me. Your hair looks great now, I hope you become less disappointed with your hair as time passes and not more so.
I hope that things are going well for you, soon you will be so busy you won't have time to worry about your hair (not that you aren't already busy now lol).
We can't wait to hear all about Calgary next year!
Best of luck to you, can't do much about the hair though :(
Take care Dean!
Thanks very much.
Your'e spot on about Calgary, and I look forward to telling you and the others all about it!
Keep well mate :-)
P.S. And seriously try and seperate the 'hair from the hyperboard'...regardless of your hair length, a lot of people on here care about you and consider you a friend :-)
Hi Dean,
Good to see you posting the board.
It might just be a case of genetics and hair doesn't always grow at uniform speed. I'm sure you are very happy with that you have growin out in the last 44 months. Alot of people don't even get that far so we have to be positive.
Cheers,
John.
I'm back to being my positive self now!
Not that 'negative Dean' lasted very long :)
But where else could i 'lament' with taht sort of concern, so I gues i took advantage of the board hehe.
And I guess 44 months is pretty good...thanks John.
Dean, thank you for posting!
Don't feel down, dude; whenever we commit to going to
such (yes, pun intend'd!) extraordinary lengths, we have good
days and bad. Lightening midlength? Could be some damage. I've
always been an endorser of Mane 'n Tail brand shampoo and (sep.)
conditioner, BUT, playin' the turncoat in this instance, may
I promote Mill Creek Biotin? It seems to mend the damage shafts.
It even has a minty-vanilla-y fragrance. Nifty.
Otherwise, I bind my hair up, either in a pony tail or a bee butt
bun using these delectable devices, attached herewith. Enjoy.

in my own personal expereince I have found that hair products don't have much of an efefct on my hair (i.e. expensive vs generic stuff). Believe it wasn't through lack of trying taht I have come to this conclusion.
That said, one never knows...so if I can get this product I wil check it out.
thanks for the help :)
