The fact that many of my friends, acquintances, girls, teachers at college and even workers in shop, and a few of them in my family...think I should have a haircut doesn't surprise and irritate me; I know longhairs are nowadays in great minority and their life philosophy isn't that much valued.
But what depresses me and makes me fringe is that people even insult long hair, saying it's just dead cells, the burden for cocky materialists, the unworthy and unnecessary... thing. They add that fact when suggesting me to get a haircut.
I need your advice on what to do with my (currently shoulder-lenght) hair.
You should do whatever you want to your it. After all, it is YOUR hair. This could mean growing it out more, keeping it like it is, or even cutting it (though it sounds like this isn't what you want). As long as it's really what you want and not neccessarily what others want, it's the right choice.
In response to this comment, I'm sure there's plenty of materialistic things about the people who are saying this that you could point out. However, I think you should just tell them it's none of their business because it isn't their body.
Good luck with your growing.
There is only one piece of acceptable advice.....
NOTHING!!!!
Thats right, do nothing. They warrent no response at all from you, just turn and walk away when they say this. They will eventually stop.

Well, one can only wonder what will happen when your hair is even longer!
Remember: Happiness first...but I am not suggesting that you give in to others but
if you are satisifed with shoulder-length hair why not keep it at that length?!
I get the same comments....but screw 'em, its my hair not theirs...
When people say cut your hair too me it just drives me to keep it long showning that im not their control or im not part of their herd...
These people that are around you must not be very nice
or else they are joking around and your not seeing it that way.
But if they are serious I would tell them to piss off and keep growing my hair.

Start reminding everyone who says that "its just dead cells" that they should start preaching that to every woman with hair to her shoulders. They won't and they won't have an intelligent response as to why they have the double standard.
As to the pride element, of course we're proud. Its a human trait, and its natural. The same people saying these things probably spend their money on nice clothes and nice things, just to show them off to the opposite sex. That's also prideful.
Just remember how hypocritical they are and laugh to yourself.
How do these folk tolerate their fingernails, toenails, and eyelashes. Off with dead cells!
Cal.
First of all, these "people" have no place being nasty to you. It is YOUR hair, not theirs, and you have every right to wear it as YOU desire.
Advice? Do as YOU please and do NOT try and defend yourself when attacked............this is the best way of all to end these comments as they will no longer have fun trying to get the best of you. Say nothing and even smile and tell them "thank you for your advice." If they continue keep repeating "thank you for your advice" and don't add any more. They will not know how to handle this. Just keep a friendly smile on your face no matter what they say and act most gracious towards them. In not too long these people will soon look elsewhere for their brainless little nibby minds to find someone else to attack on whatever they deem "not in line" to fit their standards.
To agree with them leaves them no where to go. To explain to them or try to reason with them "why" you desire to have long hair gives them a field day of abusing you and you will continue to be tormented much to the enjoyment of these people for unfortunately those that act like this lash out at others because of troubles bothering them within themselves.
A "true" friend would NEVER do such a thing.
The only real answer to saying long hair is unnecessary is "So what?"!!! Who cares if it's unnecessary. Tell them you have long hair because you like it, which is also the only answer to the "why do you have long hair?" question that we all get. If you say that you do it because you like it and it doesn't matter whether it's necessary, they will not be able to carry the conversation further. If they say that THEY don't like it, just tell them that they can have THEIR hair however THEY want. What you need are conversation enders, answers that are unanswerable because they come down to personal taste and/or matters of no importance.
Ex-wife, still friends w/ me, and I go into a convenience store, both dogs waiting patiently in the Santa Fe outside, the only items on our list a six of Woodpecker, two cigars (my brother smokes), a jar of salsa sauce (mild), a bag of lime-flavor'd Tostitos, and the Sunday NY Times. It's busy, people buying papers, soda, cigarets, milk, scratch-offs.
Four policemen come in. One, a plainclothes, says to his partner, gesturing to me, "Look at THIS asshole."
I shot a blank look at him at that instant, as though to say, "You have just GOT to be kidding!", his partner murmuring under HIS breath, "C'mon, let's go, before he starts shit."
This, all on account of my scrubby beard and just-below-shoulder-length hair. And these are our protectors? Talk about profiling.
Yours for life-long long hair,
Quenyan
We need more long haired police, and I don't mean plain clothes men pretending to be us!
