Before we get into your hair length goals I would like to say
that LONG HAIR is essentially judged by the FRONT and NOT by the back.
A perfect example of this is the Mullet: No matter HOW LONG the
back is the hair will always look shorter than someone who has bangs (a fringe) down to
his collar bone. It's a fact that few stop to think about.
When I say "shoulder length" what I actually mean is hair that is
shoulder length all around--both in back AND in front. In order to achieve this
first ALL of your hair (including and especially the FRONT) MUST REACH your TAIL.
I would also like to remind every longhaired man that IF he has a really long tail and decides to cut it to shoulder length he will NOT
have to go though an awkward phase again. NO! And the reason for this is that all the hair above the ponytail tie is one length and
will continue to behave and lie flat.
Keeping that in mind, what are YOUR HAIR GOALS?
Perhaps these questions will help to guide your answers.
* If you have really long hair (long ponytail, etc.) would you ever consider
going back to shoulder length? (Remember, you will NOT have to
expeience an awkward phase should you decide to grow your hair down to your belt later on.
* Do you want to go to terminal length? Why? Curiosity? Or do you have some other reasons.
* If you continued to get lots of grief from friends and family would
you give in to them just to get them off your back? Or is your
hair goal so important to you that NOTHING will stop you from growing your
hair to whatever length you have in mind?
* Do you think facial hair compliments long hair?
* Longer hair on older guys may make them look older still. (This applies to older women as well).
This may be true to a certain extent, but at least facial hair seems to counteract this negative effect on older men.
*If you are unhappy with the length of your hair would you be willing to have
it cut shorter?
*Do you feel that certain facial types look better with long hair? If you thought your current hair length made you look unattractive
would you hesitate to cut it?
*If you really loved someone who didn't like long hair (but who WAS WILLING to let you keep it anyway)...
would you trim it to make your loved one happy?
* If one of the best hair stylists in the world told you a certain length
of hair would enhance your particular facial features, would you be willing to let him/her cut it to the length?
* Have you made up your mind to the point of NEVER cutting your hair for ANY reason? If not what would make you want to trim off some length?
Feel free to add more questions.
Thank you!
I enjoy my long hair, so shoulder length isn't an option. The awkward hair never really hit me, so that's not even a factor. While on the subject of length, no, terminal isn't my goal, although that would be interesting. Waist is as far as I'll go, and I'm about 4-6" from that now. I'll start getting 1-3" trims when I hit that point.
I wouldn't cut my hair just because of immediate family. Maybe a trim for a girlfriend, but that's it. If I'm unhappy with it, I'd first try to work around whatever was causing the grief, but ultimately, yes I would cut my hair.
Whether or not facial hair complements long hair depends on the persons face and the hair styles. I couldn't say off the top of my head what looks good with what on who.
Only gray hair makes someone look older, and even then not always. Sometimes that only makes them look more... "distinguished".
And to have a stylist actually do anything to my hair, I want to see extensive pictures, mock ups on manikins, and other people with that hair style. I don't take years of growth lightly, even if it does grow back.
My goal as of right now is mid to lower back. I don't think that will change as time goes on, though I could possibly think about waist. Extreme lengths I have no desire for.
My hair (from your description) is almost shoulder length. It surpasses that in the back (going about 6 inches or so from shoulder length), but in the front, it comes up a bit shy of that. Wet, it's most definately shoulder length, but my hair has a wave to it, so yeah. Though all my hair fits in my tie, so that's not really a problem.
I also plan to cut it to one even length in the next few months. Not only will I think I'll like this, but it will look a whole lot neater.
I'll answer it in question by question form.
* If you have really long hair (long ponytail, etc.) would you ever consider going back to shoulder length? (Remember, you will NOT have to experience an awkward phase should you decide to grow your hair down to your belt later on.
- Yes I would consider cutting my hair, right now Im close to mid thigh length when pulled straight. The pic I posted is 6 months old.
* Do you want to go to terminal length? Why? Curiosity? Or do you have some other reasons.
- I did but not anymore. I think my terminal length would go past the floor and drag on the ground, no kidding.
* If you continued to get lots of grief from friends and family would you give in to them just to get them off your back? Or is your hair goal so important to you that NOTHING will stop you from growing your hair to whatever length you have in mind?
- I still get grief from my family but not friends. The way I look at it is my hair is so unimportant that I should not have to change it so that others may be pleased. Its a non issue for me, hair, no hair, still the same person.
* Do you think facial hair compliments long hair?
-Depends on the person.
* Longer hair on older guys may make them look older still. (This applies to older women as well). This may be true to a certain extent, but at least facial hair seems to counteract this negative effect on older men.
- Not sure what to say to this but I dont know what all the fuss is about 'looking old'.
*If you are unhappy with the length of your hair would you be willing to have it cut shorter?
-Yes, I have been thinking about it because its getting to the point where I have to plan things around my hair. example, I cant wash my hair now cause my hair wont dry in time.
*Do you feel that certain facial types look better with long hair? If you thought your current hair length made you look unattractive would you hesitate to cut it?
-Yes some people do look better with long hair vs. short but its not because of one particular facial feature its the way the whole face is put together along with the hair.
*If you really loved someone who didn't like long hair (but who WAS WILLING to let you keep it anyway)...would you trim it to make your loved one happy?
-I cant answer this truthfully unless I was in that situation right now. Speculatively, I would say probably not.
* If one of the best hair stylists in the world told you a certain length of hair would enhance your particular facial features, would you be willing to let him/her cut it to the length?
-If that length is still shoulder or longer I would. No funky hair styling though.
* Have you made up your mind to the point of NEVER cutting your hair for ANY reason? If not what would make you want to trim off some length?
-No, I would still cut my hair but not specifically for a any one person.
So does that mean you would cut your hair if you had to, to say, find a job?

Im a self employed business owner so I dont have to worry about that for now.
No.
I'm at terminal, would like longer hair. Damn.
No. And I don't know about "nothing" but no intention of cutting.
Depends
In some people's eyes, not mine.
If I am unhappy with my length, cutting it would not help.
Glad I don't have this dilemma, really glad that we both love long hair.
*laughs until he wets his pants* Um. No.
I never say never, but no intention to do so.
No
I have reached terminal length long ago - and it's shorter than I would like...
The length of my hair is something that I decide and nobody else. If friends and family don't like it, it's their problem, not mine. I have grown a very thick skin during my many years of being a longhair.
Yes; in my case it also masks my double chin...
Most people think that I am about 10 years younger than I actually am...
No.
No.
No.
No.
I am not cutting my hair for any reason.

A Linux Longhair
Hi Luckskind,
For me, it's all about finding a balance beween maximum length (AKA "terminal"); while at the same time, having my mane look like it's well maintained, --- and has a shape and style that still appeals to me.
People who know and love me for me are 100% supportive in understanding that long hair makes ME happy, --- so, in other words, anybody who doesn't like my hair the length that it is will have to just get used to it (lol)!!
I gradually started to get unhappy recently with my hair when I focussed TOO much on length; but not enough on whether it flowed and lay nicely, and just in general kept a shape that appealed to me...
Everyone is different, though. Just because I went for 3 1/2 years without having a professional hair trim doesn't mean that others have to wait as long as I did, --- or, conversely, EVER have to go get a professional trim, if they prefer instead just letting hair grow to whatever shape it forms on its own.
When something is extremely important to you (like HAIR, for example), then taking another's suggestions / preferences for how long your hair is or isn't should not matter one bit.
Conversely, if something is NOT all that important to you, personally... then in that case, one can afford the luxury of asking loved ones what they most "prefer"...

I am currently at lower back...
Next:
1 - waist lenght;
2 - belt lenght;
3- hip lenght;
4 - tailbone lenght;
5 - mid-butt lenght;
6 - butte lenght (classic)
7 - blunt

I would never cut my hair even if I were forced to. Why? I love long hair and I'll grow it as long as I can - it grows fast and healthy, no split ends. It's not possible to cut and looks great, even if a hair stylist tells me something other. No, no, no cut. NO cut. I'd rather die.
These are excellent questions Luckskind and while I resist always cutting my hair, some of the question do hit home.
I wrestle with that all the time and at this point I would not cut any.
Again, same quandary.
All the other questions I can answer with "I'm keeping my long hair"!
Bruce
.
I have no idea on how make an good synthetic answer so I will use the questions...
Yes, I would consider it.
do you have some other reasons.
Yes, sure. In a large part, for curiosity.
I just get rid off the thougth of other people
It depends on the person...
I don't totally agree with this fact. Sure, young people (about 15-20) with long hair seem older, but it's not the same effect on "old" people, in my opinion.
If I'm unhappy with the length, the better for me would be being happy with the shape and appearance of my hair. So I would trim it.
Don't know...
I think I can't answer if I'm not in this situation. I can't imagine... Fortunately, we both love long hair :)
No.
The idea of "No cut, never" please me well... But I don't guarantee that there isn't a reason for cutting it one day...
It's a pleasure ;)
