I've been thinking a lot lately about the topic of hair and how it moves, --- whether it be hair moving in the wind, hair that moves because of action (like someone running or jumping), or even just the flowing look of static "movement" as hair falls and cascades down over someone's shoulders, even when a person is standing perfectly still on a totally calm day.
I have 4 cats. I've noticed that what attracts and gets their attention the most is when ANYthing moves!!!!
All my life, for some reason, I've always noticed how hair moves... It's always fascinated me, and gotten my attention! Maybe this is because I was deprived of being allowed hair of any interesting length when I was a kid. Or, maybe, --- just like a cat --- attraction to movement is just as much a primal instict to people as it is to animals...
The longer the hair, the more interesting and varied the movement (at least, this is USUALLY the case, in my opinion), --- and conversely, the shorter the hair, the more boring (big yawwwwwwn here - lol) and limited the movement. Exceptions to this rule that I can think of are: when a longhair has a very tightly-done braid or bun; stiff dreadlocks or other similarly formed hair; and maybe also extremely matted, greasy, or pooly maintained hair.
I recently saw an old Walt Disney Halloween movie ("The Haunted Mansion", I think it was called, which was made 10 or so years ago). The main character, playing the role of a high school aged kid, had what I would refer to as, "medium-length" hair, --- by our standards here at MLHH, not very long at all, and barely even "awkward stage" length (picture Tom Cruise's "shake & bake" hair in the movie "Mssion Impossible", I think it was; or, "The Last Samuri")... BUT, i have to admit that for a Walt Disney movie, his hair was *considerably* longer than I thought the conservative Mr. Disney usually approved of or allowed (lol)!!
In any case, even though Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker were fun to watch as witches, the movie itself was kind of lame most of the time, --- and even the main charachter I didn't feel was all that good-looking (lol).... HOWEVER, that lead actor did indeed have *GREAT* hair!!!!! It was cut and shaped in such a way that whenever he ran, jumped, fought someone, the wind blew it around, etc., it was as if his hair had a life of its own... and in my opinion, that hair was pretty much the "star" of the show (lol)!!!!
Now, rest assured that I have no intention whatsoever of cutting my hard-earned looooooong hair back to "awkward stage" length; but, just thought I'd reassure those who are currently in the middle of that stage that it can look better than you think! In fact, in some cases, I totally don't blame some guys for deciding to not grow their manes past "medium-length"...
Here's a pic of me and my hair at San Francisco's Ocean Beach that was taken a couple of years ago, --- with PLENTY of MOVEMENT happening... Enjoy!!

I know what you mean. There's an actor named Rupert Friend...
...(who's dating Keira Knightley, from Pirates of the Carribean)...
...that has the hair I feel I should have (in my heart of hearts). He co-starred with Joan Plowright in a movie called "Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont"...
...an EXCELLENT movie in my opinion.
I've seen him in interviews and other movies with different styles/cuts and his hair doesn't have the same appeal as in this movie. The hair movement is just different.
Banana
I know EXACTLY what you mean, Banana, as my, "heart of hearts" tells me those sort of things all the time, too (lol)!!
Ahhhh, if only genetics had been kinder to me in the inHAIRitence dept. (lol)....

Wow, we were in that ride at Disneyland just this past week. Definitely trippy.
They definitely welcome longhairs now, as the above photo taken last week will attest!
Bill
I forgot that you were at Disneyland, not Yosemite (which I mistakenly mentioned in my otehr reply to you). I think this is a FANTASTIC pic of you, Bill!!!
- Ken
Yep, way cool! Fantastic hair and beard. And I love that t-shirt too!
Don
Thanks!
We'll have to meet up sometime! San Francisco is just an hour's drive up the freeway. RickG and I get together sometimes; maybe we can make it "three of us".
Bill
I took a picture in disneyworld (not disneyland) In which i am leaning against a lampost infront of toontown, so either it's an exact copy of the calafornia one or i imagined it
But i stood there..
We have found the Florida and California parks to be almost identical, so much so that we'll say, "Let's skip that, we went in there the last time," when "the last time" was in the other park. The main difference we've seen is that the vegetation varies because Florida is more humid and is hospitable to different plants.
Bill
Geez, I might have mistaken you for one of the characters there!
Hi Bill,
Good to see youi back and hope you both had a good time at Disneyland and you certainly look well and looks like you had fun.
Cheers,
John.B
Hi Bill,
Welcome back from your vacation, and I am delighted that you had a grand time in Disneyland. I have never been to Disneyland myself, but DID geat to the Magic Kingdom in Florida about 15 years ago, and agree that it was FUN!
Your hair, beard, and shirt are looking GREAT there as well, keep it all growing and flowing!
Take care,
David
Was the name of the movie. A fun movie, but not a great one. Bette Midler was her usual campy self.
Carol
Here's the dude Ken was talking about...
By coincidence...he now works as a hairdresser in L.A. (LOL!!)
Omri Katz
This is one of the major factor in my love of having hair again!
I love the feel moving across my shoulders and back; sometimes I'll sit without a shirt and turn my head from side to side just to experience the movement.
One thing I have become much more aware of is the mannerisms different people have to control the movement of their hair; be it a hand sweep, a head movement, a body movement, a turn into the wind, etc. Now that I have finally gotten through the awkward stage I feel like I am in the awkward movement stage, trying not to put on a comedy skit just to keep my hair out of my face!
That was some interesting aspect of the hair you discussed, Ken. And I agree, its movement is really fascinating! And that photo of your golden curls is the proof! It's true that medium-length hair would move more than really long but in a big storm both would be going crazy :D
Wonderful thoughts Ken.
Let it grow, let it flow!!
