hey guys. i'm 28 and have decided to grow my hair for the first time, mostly for a change and to see how it looks before it falls out. anyway my last haircut was about 2 months ago.
my hair looks really bad at the moment- i've got naturally thick hair and it looks like i've just come straight from the 70s! my question at this stage is is it ok to go for a cut? i don't mean cut the lenght of it, just 'thin' it out abit? am i right to assume that pro barbers can thin your hair without cutting any of the lenght?
Hello there! Glad you're deciding to become a longhair! First thing I want to mention though, you're never going to get long hair if you keep trimming it to neaten it up. There are much better alternatives to neaten up your hair in the awkward stage. I also have thick hair, but managed it with hair gel, usually parted down the middle until it was long enough to stay brushed back. Also, now is the time to really start taking extra good care of your hair. The short hair you have now will be the ends of your long hair in the future!
Be sure to post some pictures for us! It'll be great tracking your progress.
Best of luck!
Pretty much here is the deal. Any trims will cause those hairs to be one trim shorter. Those hairs will always be that trim behind the rest. If you keep chopping off inches here and there, your hair will never reach the desired length because in two months, the hair will be at the pre-trim length and you'll go in for a trim. Theoretically, you could have everything shorter so that only your furthest back hairs are reaching your shoulders but this is not the true longhair and will not look right.
That being said, trims are acceptable when trying to maintain a length and make a final result look better. For example, my hair does not all come to one place. When it gets to a good length, I can trim the back hairs to get a uniform ending spot. Trims at the medium length (the shaggy or awkward stage which some desire to stay at) are only for if you want to stay there. Basically to be shaggy but neat.
So, have no trims until you get to the length you want.
I wouldn't suggest any trims, especially at the beginning. And don't mourn the fact you have thick hair, be thankful! I've always wondered why people hate the awkward stage. WEll, my hair is straight so I don't know what is it when it's curly but still what's the big deal? Enjoy the crazy look, the 'bushy blindness'(that's when your hair is constantly in front of your eyes), etc... ;}
Oh, and have good luck and post pics :P
