I posted how I look in these about a year ago so I thought I'd show an updated version. My ex-wife, whom I'm now friends with, put these in for me. I'd like to try to learn how at some point but it seems difficult. She did it so effortlessly.
The one thing is that I don't like how it looks from the front. Otherwise it's very comfortable and keeps my hair restrained nicely even on a windy day like yesterday was.
I know Joao has tried this style but I'm not sure if anyone else here has. Would you consider it? I really some might it deem it too feminine.
I have tried that style, and I wore it out a couple of times. I can do it myself actually, there's a picture at my site ^^ It is really eye catching and some people will obiously think it's too feminine, but then again, people think that way about lonh hair even if loose, so what the heck?
If you like it, it's a style to keep! =D It looks great by the way =)
Thanks João. I'm in awe of how good you are at braiding your own hair. It's really an inspiration for me to improve.
Thanks, Juli414!
Proof positive French braids were born out of the Normand (Hello? French!) invasions, the perfect swordsmen's style to keep ones hair long and tucked safely within the confines of ones headgear and/or away fr. the grasping mitts of ones opponents.
Really eye-opening bio webpage ON Dick "Sharkman" Marcinko! Thanks for bringin' it to all of our attention, Jul' . . .

I agree. He's hardly feminine. Thanks for posting that.
French braids are just awesome, it's one of the styles I like best?
Feminine? 1 - I don't think so
2 - Who cares?
You're right. We shouldn't really care. Thanks for your comment.
It does look good from the back Jason, I'm not sure if I would
have them although I might it depends on my mood at the time.
Like you i may not like the look from the fron. I have a high
hair line and it might accentuate that a bit I don't know.
Kevin
Thanks Kevin.
I find I don't like how they look even on women from the front. I'm not sure if I can put my finger on it but just don't.
I often put my hair in a single braid, so a French braid is just an extension of that style, but although I did one by accident once (!) I've never been able to repeat it. I think it looks OK. I'm just not sure whether I could be bothered to do it, even if I could figure it out properly.
LOL. I wish I could understand how you managed to do one accidentally. It appears to me to be a different technique than the three strand.
That looks really good on you, Jason! Don't worry about the whole fem thing. João's right -- everyone's going to have their own opinions about it, but as long as you enjoy it and like it, who cares. =) Stay well and see you around the site.
-James
Thanks James. I noticed some curious glances from people we passed but that's kind of fun actually.
i think frenchies look nice on guys.
as far as learning how to do them, i find it's much easier to do them in reverse. they look like they are inside out, which i think is a bit cooler looking. but while you're brading, it's easier to do and your fingers and hair don't get tangled so much. i posted a pic, but i know it isn't a very good one.
If I'm not mistaken, nic, isn't that a dutch braid?
i don't know. i've always called them inside out braids. the first time i did one, it was an accident - that was just the way my fingers went when i did my braid. i liked how it looked and it was so much easier, so i just kept doing them that way. i don't doubt they have a real name, i've just never known of one.
My girlfriend put them in one for me once and I liked how they looked and felt. The pictures in the link are of Dutch braids. I think they're the same as yours.
dutch braids
you learn something new everyday. thanks for learnin' me somethin'! :)
Jason, your hair looks wonderful in the braid. May I add I see it as a manly braid. Your hair is an inspiration to all of us.
Cheers,
Don
Hi Don,
Thanks so much!
I like it on you jason, but i don't think it is me somehow, but its looks really cool and almost warrior like. Thanks for posting them Jason.
Cheers Dave
Thanks Dave. I agree that probably a lot of guys wouldn't wear them but it's always fun to try a new style at least once.
Nice pictures, Jason! I really dig the french braids! As far as it being too feminine, I wouldn't worry about it. The person who wears it really defines on how feminine it is, and it honestly doesn't look feminine on you at all. So if you enjoy it, I encourage you to wear this style.
Hey Brandon,
Yeah, it's true that attitude determines a lot.
Thanks for your comment.
Hi Jason,
Great photos, as always, and I think those french braids look awesome, and I am happy for you that you are friends with your ex. Actually, I don't think they look "fem" at all, and one day, I would like to try a braid of some kind, but probably not something this difficult to do on my own. I see you are still being blessed with great weather where you are. It appears that Noel must have bypassed your area entirely. That storm hit Nova Scotia hard the night before last.
Take care,
David
Thank you David.
I think you definitely got the worst of the storm. Fortunately no one was killed.
Hi Jason,
I'm so glad that you are on good terms with you ex and she did a great job in the frencg braid. I think they look great on you and Nic and it's not fem at all. At the end of the day if you comfortable with you hair like that in public great and at the end of the day it's you hair and not someone elses opinion.
Great pics as always Jason.
Cheers,
John.B
Thanks John.
I agree that we really need to form our own opinions and not be overly swayed by others. Thanks too about my ex. It's definitely better to be friends.
I personally wouldn't wear one like this but I think it looks great on you. Does it look feminine? Not at all.
Hey Chris,
Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.
depends on the length of hair. I see alot of men with some very good looking french braids at the ren faires I go to, and they are defintely masculine, but really only with the hair that is mid back length....saw a guy with hair only about sholder length in a french braid and it did stike me as slightly feminine, but possibly only because it stuck out kinda kid-like becasuse it was short and it was not done too terribly well so it had alot of flyaways and such. But on the guys that have french braids that are mid back length or longer, I say go for it, its smexy :)
I have seen so few on men that it's hard for me to compare but I think I can visualize what you're saying. I agree that in this instance especially longer would look less feminine.
Thanks for your comment.
Friends with the ex? Cool! It is easier to braid someone else's hair, then your own. Especially when doing french braids. I could easily french braid someone elses hair, but it takes more effort, and a slightly different technique, to do it myself. I tend to prefer a looser french braid, as my hair is both fine and thin. As to it being feminine, it's all in how you carry yourself. The confident man will come across as masculine, french braid or not. What others think/say, is irrelevant. If nature's gift of hair adorns the head of both sexes, shouldn't the ability to style it apply to both as well?
Carol
That's an awesome way of looking at it. Thanks for your insights.
Looks great Jason! You have done some of the most fabulous things with your hair and no matter what, it always looks A+
Would I wear my hair that way? Sure. Long hair is fun. :-) But alas, when it comes to braids I can only do one type.
As always, you photos are always so well done.
Take Care
Justin~
Hey Justin,
Thanks so much about my hair and the photos.
Maybe sometime you could have someone put a french braid into your hair. If you do please be sure to take pics!
That's one of the most heartening sentences I've read in a long time. Funny how life turns out in the end.
My feelings exactly. Rose and I went through a lot but in the end it's far better to forgive each other and remember the good rather than dwell on resentment and forfeit all the time spent together.
Hey Jason,
GREAT pics there, --- and the French braids look totally AWESOME on you!!
I have tried them on me at times; but, truthfully, for some reason I just don't like how they look on me. I am totally incapable to doing a French braid myself. So, in the past, it has always been somebody-or-other who wants to goof around w/ my hair, and ends up doing this style... But, I have never felt comfortable wearing it that way for very long (I'm not even sure if I can articulate, "why", --- I just don't like how it looks on ME, that's all)....
I have a woman friend who used to wear her hair in a French braid a lot, and on HER, I just was in total awe how elegant and beautiful it looked! She now has short hair, unfortunately. But anytime someone has done that style on me, it's almost as if I can't wait to get that braid undone, --- that's how much I really feel it doesn't look right on me.
Take care, --- and as usual, the autumn colors in the background of your pics also just blow me away!!!
- Ken
Hey Ken,
Well, they're definitely not for everybody. I think it's cool though that you allowed one to be put into your hair to at least see how it looks.
Thanks about my photos!
Jason
I would give it a try I have no problem trying various things with my hair its just the reactions I get from other people
Sometimes those reactions are the fun part!
Yeah Jason, ya gotsta love those exxes who STILL are friends w/ us "overly demanding" macho lugs! LOL! I've got me one, too, does great braids, or DID, when my hair WAS long enuff! Can't wait. She'd braid me one down to my belt, sometimes two "skinnies" in front, one on each side, too.
I see nothin' feminine abt. French braids. Didn't they initially come fr. the (repeat) Normand invasions? Methinks that, yes, they did. They were born out of sheer practicality. It's actually the perfect sworsdmen's hairstyle, a way of havin' longer hair, yet, as you said, restraining it. (Loved those post-Hurricane-Noel winds here in the Northeast, too.)
For life-long longer-hair'd styles, swordsman or not,
Quenyan
Hey Quenyan,
I'm glad that you've also made peace with your ex. I'm looking forward to seeing some of those braids on you when your hair gets longer.
I agree. There is kind of a warrior look to them and they're definitely practical for restraining hair.
Thanks for your comment.
Jason
I have worn this style out many times when my wife has braided my hair. I don't think I get anymore looks than any other way I wear my hair but who knows or cares. The main thing is that it does control the hair and also that I always liked how a french braid looks on women that I have seen,
