Having read over numerous posts and many about employment discrimination it wasn't that long ago when I myself was working as a temp and was getting along great at the workplace. I even made some friends there.
I received praise by my supervisor, but after a short time there I was notified by the temp agency via phone that "they don't need me to return". when I inquired to why after my persistence(the temp lady wouldn't disclose any info at first) I was told it was because a certain management person felt "I didn't fit the team".
yes, I had worked there with my longish hair and nothing ever was said about it, but I did notice that all the management types there had very short hair so I am not sure as to why I was dismissed and given such a lame reason as to why since my productivity was up.
working as a temp especially in Florida you have zero rights. they can't let you go at any instant without giving a reason. even though I busted my ass for the company it obviously wasn't enough to impress them. do I think my hair had anything to do with it? strong possibilty since this area seems to have a strong antilonghair attitude towards males even though they won't come out and say it.
so for those who have been in similiar situations you're not alone.
Interesting story, thanks for sharing it. I am currently in the job market and, although I have not had any interviews as of yet, I wonder if my having long(er) hair will disqualify me from getting a good job. On the flip side of the long hair issue, though, when I had my hair really long a few years ago, it actually helped me get a job. President of the company played in a band part time, and was growing his out to be long.
That's one reason why companies use temp agencies, so they can shed staff without the mess of unemployment claims or reasons why. Wheather it was your hair who knows but they don't really have to say. They may tell the agency if there were issues but usually if they just need to trim labor costs they just say don't send so and so.
If your hair was a factor I think you would have been gone before now.

I worked at a place once that had 90% temps among the workers.
workers essentially have no rights in Florida regardless of hair length. I was just wondering if the hair was a factor even though there was no "grooming" code which prohibited it. I think the companies like to use temps when the production is up and then release them as it's slowing down and then notify the agency when the production is expected to go back up.
there should be a law prohibiting such abuse by companies that do this and it occurs way to frequently on a regular basis here.
the terminology "Temp to Perm" doesn't always mean what it implies.
A friend of mine cut his hair short after moving to Florida. I have heard that FL is not too hospitable to guys w/ long hair. You could always get a job in DC, where discrimination based on hair style is prohibited by law. The weather's not so great though, you get boiled in summer and frozen in winter!
what is the job market like there?
