I have been growing my hair for almost a year, just going to the hairdresser twice in that time for a bit of shaping and tidying.
Unfortunately I know of no other longhaired guys with whom I can compare notes or of whom I can ask questions..... and I have a question:
"How do you hold a ponytail in place?"
I have tried tying with a narrow black ribbon and catching with a rubber band, but both simply slide off within a short while, no matter how tight I tie or how many times I wrap the rubber band around the hair. Even with two fixed mirrors I have great difficulty in seeing exactly what I am doing, and feel I need three hands (at least) to accomplish fixing a ponytail!
Oh, and another question:
"Does anyone use a hairnet at night?"
It is the only thing I can think of to stop my hair becoming one tangled mess by morning (which it usually is!).
Thanks Guys,
Murdo
First of all, don't use rubber bands. They are extreemly damaging to your hair. Go to the store and get some ponytail holders that do not have any metal parts on them. These cause the least damage. Scunchi makes something called hair hosiery that you can get at K-Mart. If they slip out or off very easily, perhaps your hair is not yet long enough for a ponytail.
As far as sleeping, I find that a braid or bun (high up so that I am not trying to sleep on a bump) usually keeps the tangles at bay.
Hope this helps.
I use black ponytail bands sold at most drug stores, without the metal clasp. As for how, I practice. I brush my hair back. Then, I use both hands to gather and hold all my hair back and the nape of my neck with one hand. With the other hand I put the tie around the gathered hair, grasp it with the other hand, twise and put it over again, grasp with the free hand and twist to put over a third time.
Practice.

I agree: the braided no-metal hair elastics are the best.
The ones with the metal tube to complete the circle snags hair
in the metal ends. Plain rubber bands just snag hair all over.
Here in NY/NJ (USA), drugstores, pharmacies, variety stores,
supermarkets all have a large aisle of hair holders and gadgets.
Most are for girls and are terribly non-functional.
The best ponytailer I ever found was in the Highlander catalogue:
it's a small pewter button with a celtic pattern and a
braided elastic that slips over it. (I didn't understand how it
worked until I bought a similar one at The Body Shop that was
already in the right "knot"). The BIG WIN is that the elastic
grips tight with 2 loops and can be popped off with out having to
pull your hair thru the elastic.
I've tried many barettes, particularly the ones with the
mock turtose shell since that blends with my brown hair.
My favorite is currently a plastic oval with a stick that slips
under it. 3 for a dollar. They slip on and off easily and I can
wear it in the shower!
Thanks guys for your advice. Here in the wilds of Scotland I dont think Ive seen special pony tail grips such as those you mention. I thought everyone uses rubber bands.
Maybe youre right and my hair isnt long enough to make into a ponytail yet but its well over my collar and getting very untidy. So you dont think a hairnet is a good idea at night? I cant think of anything else to use.

Murdo, check out the link I posted. I use the scrunchies sold by this woman. They don't damage the hair, and look pretty good at the same time.

Before you consider chopping it off, contact the person who runs the eBay store. She does have ones that are much smaller. :)
