I'm 17 and i've always had short haircuts. I've jumped from buzzcuts, to just short cesar cuts. One of my biggest problems was that I had a cowlick at the front of my hairline (on a side) that made my hair stick up if it was too short. The longer it gets, the more it gets weighed down and gets disguised.
I tried growing it out and got to about 4 months (from a buzz cut) and reached this really awkward phase. My brother kept on saying I looked sick, so I cut it off. I REALLY wish I didn't do that because if I didn't, my hair would probably be past my shoulders by now..
But i've decided i'm gonna do it! I have extrememly thick, black hair. If anything, the only thing that might push me to cut it is the fact that my cowlick sort of distorts my hairline, but i'm gonna try to make sure that doesn't get in the way. Does anyone here have a cowlick + long hair?
I'm also in the process of growing my hair. I'll hopefully be out of the awkward stage pretty soon.
As far as my shorter hair experiences go: Yes, I had the same problems you are going through. I also have very thick hair which has a slight wave to it. I'd have a little bit of a cowlick, but my biggest problem was the poofyness. Even though my hair was only 2 inches long, I could still pull off a pretty good afro.
To keep my hair looking as good as I could, I used a boatload of hairspray, let it dry and then brush again. It seemed to take down the volume of it quite a bit. If hairspray wasn't an option I wore a hat until my hair got long enough where the hat didn't want to stay on.
At any rate, best of luck to you. No scissors, and welcome to MLHH!

Once my hair started getting a few inches long and I was able to part it down the middle, my cowlick ended up being "combed over," so to speak, and eventually, your hair gets used to it and presto, no more cowlick. Everything is parted nice and neat.
I have a cowlick AND a double crown...ugh!
You'll discover that a cowlick actually makes for a better look with long hair than without it. Hopes that encourages you.
I also have a cowlick in the same place that drove me nuts when I had short hair. Now that its about 18 months the cowlick has been gone for some time now, and it really dosnt distort my hairline at all, in fact my cowlick hairs are the finest and most kept hairs in my bangs.
