Hello all,
I'd like to introduce myself. I've been visiting this website since early September, and although I've been lurking with the exception of having made three posts, I have found this place to be a great (not to mention very useful) community with very helpful and caring people. I am another (teenager) who is in the process of growing his hair out, and have been doing this since mid-April (so coming up to 7 months). My name is Lee, I'm 17, and I live in the UK. To say something about myself hair-wise, I can say there haven't been many times in some years where I've 100% wanted a haircut. I also find that within only two weeks or so of my hair being cut it puffs up, as it's wavy. I have found that by growing my hair this puffiness is reduced due to its weight, and I'm liking this a lot better.
I'd say I've wanted to grow my hair since early 2006, although I had considered it beforehand but not too seriously. The reason for continuing hair cuts through until April this year was not because I couldn't take the pressure (hell no! I've been told to get a haircut by many of my peers throughout the years, mainly because I only got a haircut once every few months - I think I'm immune to that pressure, albeit very annoying!). It is because my school (which is single-sex) disallows long hair - I was wondering what your views on this are? (or is it needless to ask? :P)
So, as it's my last school year now (which I started in September), I decided to stop getting a haircut in April as it'll allow my hair to grow, so by the time I leave next June, it'll be quite long, but it won't be long enough to violate any rules (or so I thought!) - although it would certainly be pushing it - the rule was to have less than shoulder length hair (don't take that too literally - you wouldn't be allowed shoulder length hair). Well today I was waiting outside the swimming pool in a group, and for some reason (I guess it's because some of us have 'longer' hair), a sports teacher told us about a rule change that will take place (next week, I think) where your hair has to be at least one inch from the eyebrow (is that even enforceable?!?!) - so I feel very disappointed, but I'm determined not to cut my hair as I don't want to go back and repeat these almost 7 months! I was wondering here on whether there are any ways in which to make my hair appear looking shorter, which aren't noticeable - I know this sounds stupid, but I hope you can understand why I'm asking. I really hope I can continue my journey! I don't want to be delayed further :'(
Thank you for reading, and I apologize if this is a somewhat long-winded introduction. I think I'll register myself as a member in a second :P
My photo above by the way is from my 6 month mark (mid-October), and the photo is below was taken a few days later. There's a large difference in the hair as I think the night before the first photo I washed my hair with conditioner, and the night before the second I washed with shampoo only.
Thanks,
Lee.
Argh, sorry - I meant half an inch - I don't know what I was thinking there! My apologies!
Hi and welcome!
For many years I had to hide my longish (6-9 inches) hair on top. What I would do for those occasions is slick it straight back when a strong gel. It completely concealed how long my hair really was.
You can see what I mean in the first photo on the right in this link.
concealed length
I say curls.
Everyone with curly hair knows it appears to not grow at all.
If you could manage pin curls, you might manage to stay under the radar. However, note...they'll be difficult.
Pin Curls
Curls would work to make your hair appear shorter, at least for a while. But that might still be a problem with the administrators if they realize you're trying to get around the rule. Also, a perm is a bad idea for longhairs, and curling your hair for every school day would be a real pain. If you took a shower or had swimming at school the curls would wash out.
If the immediate problem is to keep your hair above your eyebrows, you could change how you comb your hair to comb it back more, and use gel or hairspray to hold it in place if necessary. I try to avoid putting things like that in my hair, but it's definitely better than having to cut it.
Hello ;)
Welcome, first.
Then, for your problem, I think that combing back your hair is the better solution if it's possible (It worked great for me with my straight hair, I don't with yours). Years ago, at some month of growing, it's the method I used to get rid off the awkward stage : gel and combing back.
I wish you will get rid off this problem...

Welcome to the board and hope your long hair journey goes well
for you.
Jason has given you some good advice so I won't add anything else
other than to wish you good luck and do keep us informed.
Kevin
Thanks all, for your suggestions :-)
I'll definitely be following your's, Jason.
Thank you for welcoming me too!
You look really great. Best advice that you have had works - gel and brush it back. Good luck to all that you do to be a unique individual and not a puppet of the educational system.
