So...yeah, I'm a natural blonde but I HATE it, have kept myself as a redhead for the last few years and think it looks much better with my skintone and my eyecolor (still think blue looks the best but i cant have blue hair in my career sadly), however seeing as I am trying desparetly to grow my hair out again, I have seen dozens of warnings on how to not use commercial haircolor because it damages your hair. I normally use the garnier 100% color, but I came across henna the other day and I LOVE the red it creates for blonder type hair, and was wondering if anyone here had experience with it. Also read that it makes your hair seem thicker which would just be an added bonus as I have pathetically baby fine hair and thats what usually discourages me when i grow it out, becacause it never looks all full and wonderful like so many others. Just looking for some input as I need to touch up within the next 2-3 weeks and looking at alternatives that may be nicer to my hair then commercial stuff (which usually burns my scalp anyways)
I use henna, but my natural colour is dark and going grey. Just be sure that you only used stuff that contains herbs only and no metal salts, as the latter can react with synthetic dyes that have been previously applied to your hair with bad results (damage to hair).
In your case the simplest way to ensure that doesn't happen is to only use pure henna. I can't do that because I'm trying to darken, but I've never used synthetic dyes anyway, so no problem.
I like henna! Your hair can feel a little crunchy right afterwards, but the condition improves once it settles down, and is better than before. It does make your hair feel thicker too. The colour can take a little while to settle as well.
Did you know that Lucille Ball was really a blonde and used henna all her life? I guess it's hard to tell if you are watching 'I Love Lucy' in black and white!
Hi Electros,
Thanks for the info. BTW I did know about Lucy.
A couple of questions for you.
-Do you use henna on your beard? I don't want to color my hair, but my beard is pure white if I don't color it a bit.
-Are you using the bar type (from Lush) or the boxed type?
Peace,
Don
I do use it on my beard as well, but it doesn't last as long there because I trim my beard. It also doesn't seem to take quite as well on beard hair to begin with. I have thought about maybe using synthetic dye on my beard but still henna on my head hair.
The stuff I use is loose and sold in a paper bag.
Thanks, I may try it on the beard. I've used Just For Men a lot. I've found techniques to keep it from looking fake with a uniform dark color. I like some white to remain. It looks more natural.
The color fades rather quickly to an unattractive nicotine stain shade. I once had a barber ask if I was a smoker because of the color. yuck!
You really need to color regularly.
Cheers,
Don
