Hey, hitman, split ends is nothing so serious so don't worry. Overall, split ends usually occur once in a while like 2 years probably but that's really relative since that depends on hair type and someone actually never get them. The way you care for it, if it's dry or it's simply more prone to getting splits.
To your question... If you really trust that hairdresser don't hesitate to do a small trim (like 1-2 cms at most) but only if you trust him/her! A lot of barbers simply cut a big chunk of hair :( If you are able to reach the split ends you can cut them yourself but I've read that you should use sharp scissors or it may cause other damage.
And your last question -- it depends on the person. Some never get trims since they want to grow it completely naturally. Others have regular trims to shape their hair. The most often practice however is to get a trim whenever you see your hair damaged which would again depend on your haircare. If you have healthy hair, a an annual trim would be perfectly fine.
Good luck with the split ends! Tell us how it comes out.
Everytime someone mentions split ends, I get out my magnifying glass and have a look-see. (I'm an old fart, can't see up close). After 2 years, yes I think I found ONE!! Of course there may be another one in there hiding, but there isn't many! Now this is at the same time I've been told I need a trim because my hair is FULL of dead ends. You know, that's where the hair which is really just dead cells anyway, is dead. Huh?!
Well I think a lot of people believe that you automaticly get split ends if you don't trim often enough. So it's not that they SEE split ends, but that they believe in split end theory.
I would have a look up-close and verify that you do have a split end problem before running off getting a trim. Of course if a little trim doesn't bother you and you actually want one, then go for it. Let us know how you make out.

Bruce, that has happened to me as well. Almost everyone's annoying me by saying I have split end I've also seen only 1 and got rid of it. That's just because they can't believe your hair will grow ok if you don't have trims. What's wrong with them? Hair was supposed to grow naturally without any trims.
that I was told at my last trim (as I am leaving my hair at waist level now)that according to the person at the salon NOT everybody gets split-ends?
As Ripley would say: "Believe it or not."
Yes Justin we can believe it :-)

Go through your ends and with a small pair of scissors just trim off each split end you see.
It's really quite easy and relaxing and eliminates the need for a full trim job (for awhile longer).
