Somewhere below someone recently mentioned that they have stopped using shampoo and just wash their hair with water. His pics looked brilliant and it has set me thinking whether I would try the same thing. Does anyone else use this method and what do they think about it ? Have you tried it and not liked it ? I'd really like to know.
For the record my hair is very fine and tends to become very oily. I end up washing it and shampooing it about every third day. If I don't it will certainly feel odd - but maybe that will pass. Comments welcome.
I've got very fine and straight hair that gets oily fast. I did water-only for about 8 weeks... Didn't like it at all. Best bet is to cut down on washing frequency to once a week for example, then WO will be a lot easier to transition in to.
Thankyou - I think it will be a case of cutting down and accustoming scalp to produce less oil maybe
Hey there,
I tried not washing my hair for a while too. I have fine oily hair. It didn't work well for me. I just have to wash it every day. However, I have switched to using a VERY small amount of shampoo, just at the roots. The small amount doesn't even make a lather. But it does cut the oil close the scalp. This has allowed the rest of my hair to keep its oil and not get all poofy.

Thanks - I think this might be worth a try as giving up altogether might not work out too well.
Yeah, this comes up on a fairly regular basis...often enough to be part of the R.A.Q.

I thank you for your helpful suggestion. I thought the idea of this board was to stimulate discussions - my mistake clearly.
Why was that your mistake? This board is here for more than just discussions...it's also a source for answers to questions.

This board is here for discussions and I think that the link to the FAQ section was a valid contribution to your discussion.
But to your topic.....
I tried for 2 weeks going with conditioner only and it was great. The only thing I didnt realize is that the hair on the back of my head became matted (i didnt know this until my sister pointed it out, after all, who looks at the back of their own head?...LOL) and almost like a natural dread. So back to the regular washing I went.
My hair is quite fine and and have to wash my hair daily. When doing this I use only a pea sized about on shampoo and let it stay on my hair for only 2 or 3 seconds (serioulsy, anly longer for me is too long) and only on the scalp, never down the actual shaft of the hair.
Washing this way should make the switch easier if you do it for a few weeks to let the oil glands find a balance.

Sorry if my reply below sounded a bit cross. Actually - and I mean this as constructive feedback, it is the way that the answers are given in the FAQ that really annoyed me. Take a look. I found this one not at all in keeping with the way I have always experienced this board (very positive) and rather a put down. A bit of revision might not be a bad idea.
How so exactly? I am the one who handles the F.A.Q. and as noted on that page it's done with as little personal opinion as possible apart from personal experience.
I think you may be trying to read into it things that aren't really there. I don't see how what was said on the subject could ever be perceived as a putdown.
The fact is that this subject DOES come up often here and most people who try going without "product" for awhile go back to it and say that they are glad they tried it but like what shampoo does afterall...this is all that is reflected in the F.A.Q.
Maybe you can give us a report in a few months on your experience without shampoo (to continue the discussion)?

I did water only washing this whole last summer. The longest I went for was maybe 3 or 4 months without shampoo or conditioner, just water. I gradually have started shampooing/conditoning again, but I hope to keep it to a minimum.
I have fine whispy hair, and it deffinately made a big difference in how the hair behaves. The natural oil will give weight and volume to the hair, now I am washing about once a month again because it was like the hair would start sticking in clumps, not matted, just hard to run your fingers through it.
If you're curious, try it!
Hiya!
Im doing the WO washing thing, works great for me. It takes long for the scalp to adjust and start producing less oils to hairs (long = months). So i guess picking the time to start needs to be done carefully, unless you dont mind "oily" look for weeks :P
I use apple-sider-vinergar, very very small amount, in final rinsing water as "conditioner". Returns hairs ph to "normal" and making hairs smooth (closing the hair "things" (sorry, dunno the word in english)).
When i started, i had to wash hairs every day or every other day. I felt that just water is not enough at the beginning to clean my hairs, so i used very small amount of baking-soda mixed with water to wash your hairs, but very small amount, result is same as using shampoo, but less chemicals (and that way less stress to scalp) :P Now i dont do that anymore, just water.
Jojoba oil to hair-ends half an hour before washing will help keeping the hair-ends drying.
And i also notice that less hairs is dropping out of head compared to the time i used shampoo.
Tho, im not "nature" person, even that it might seem that way. I do use (very very rarely) professional salon conditioner to end of my hairs, but thats only when theres photo-shoot :P (But the conditioner makes my hairs look "heavy" after half day and i dont like it.)
My hair is blond and thin. I'll post year update next month :P
All the best
