I've been growing my hair out for about a year and half now (it has reached my shoulders), but something bad has happened.
I got hit by a couple bad illnesses while in Peru (parasite, salmonella), which put me on a mostly bread diet for weeks as well as in the hospital. I'm fine now, but one month after the illness resolved I noticed I'm shedding a much larger amount of hairs. If I gently brush my hair with my hands I will get at least half a dozen hair. It's much worse when I wash it. I comb every couple days and there is always a pretty large ball of hair. It's so depressing I try not to think about it.
My internet reading say this faster rate of shedding could last up to 6 months (!!). In that case, my hair will be too thin to look good with long hair, and I guess I have to start all over again. After 3 weeks of this rapid shedding, I am starting to notice my hair in the back getting thinner.
Any suggestions about what I should do?
I would wait and just see what happens with your hair. i just went through a stage of hair loss i beleive to be due to medication. its scary to see the hair falling out. but eventually less and less will fall out.
While you're waiting, it would probably help your body to recover more quickly if you eat well, drink lots of water and exercise.
ONE THING YOU DONT WANT TO DO IS OVER WASH YOUR HAIR, WE LOSE HAIR AS WE AGE SO I RECOMMEND TAKING HAIR NURTRIENTS AS WELL AS EXTERNAL TO FEED THE HAIR AND MAKEING IT STRONGER, HAIR SPRAYS CAUSE BREAKAGE, IAM 65 RETIRED WITH A FULL HEAD OF HAIR NOW DOWN MIS-WAY ON MY BACK, IAM A PART OF OLD WEST RE-ANACTORS AS MOVIE STAND INS, SO USE A GOOD HAIR SUPPLEMENT, VITIMAN, WEAR A SHOWER CAP AND DONT OVER SHAMPOO,
I'd go see a nutritionist, perhaps you need to adjust your diet or you need some supplements to help your body back to full health after your illness.
If you can't get to see a nutritionist then here are some guiding principals:
1) Take a multivitamin (can't hurt)
2) Eat 5 portions of fruit or veg a day.
3) Eat lots of chicken (very easy to digest and protein rich)
4) Drink milk.
5) Drink lots of water (6 glasses a day).
Avoid:
1) Stodgy complex carbs at your evening meal.
2) Alcohol
3) Smoking (passive included)
4) Coffee/Caffine
Don't despair....
Take good care of your body and chances are your hair will recuperate also.
A couple of years ago, I thought I had reached terminal length, but turned out that I'd been quite sick without really realizing it. (I thought I was just tired and overworked.....but the diagnosis was diabetes.) Once I got my illness under control, the hair started growing again.
Talk to you doctor about this.
Good Luck
