Hey out there. I'm a guy who has always kept his hair fairly short for the managability aspects of it. I do a lot of things like woodworking, carving, bike mechanics, stuff like that, and having hair constantly getting in my face is kind of annoying.
Over the past year though, my wife has finally convinced me to try growing it out, to be patient through the time that always annoys me, when the front is long enough to get in the way, but not long enough to tie back.
I HATE the feel of gel and hairspray in my hair, so that's not an option for me.
My question for you out there is, HOW to you deal with that in between stage? Are there any acceptable "hair accessories" for guys with hair of this length? The only style I see regularly around here when it comes to guys with long hair is that grunge loose look and the ponytail, and my hair isn't quite long enough for the ponytail yet :(
Any advise?

And as for your question, is it long enough to push behind your ears? Because that's a pretty easy option to keep it out of the way. If not, bobby pins are another alternative, though some may mind them too "feminine." Hankerchief's are another alternative, which are masculine and help keep those annoying hairs out of the way. Personally, I just waited until it was long enough to do anything with it, which was obnoxious and not always fun at times.
Hope some of those things help. Keep it growing, man! :)
Unfortunately, it's not at the stage where it's long enough to tuck behind my ears yet. it's about an inch or two shy for that yet :( I've been contemplating the bobby pins, but haven't made a decision on them yet.
This morning someone actually suggested using something called a "skullcap" which seems to be a refined "tailored" version of using a bandanna, so I may look into getting a couple of those. The biggest problem is that I work in an office that is very strict about anything that could be considered "gang colours" and unfortunately, it's a big things for gangs to wear bandannas to show off what group they belong to. Skullcaps, by extension, could fall into the same category. I've just started wearing my ballcap for that reason, and may go back to wearing my scots bonnet too to help keep it out of my face. I was just hoping maybe someone had another suggestion.
speaking of which, how exactly do you do that?
I have had similar issues myself and found that a bandana can be your best friend.
Being as I had a hard time finding one that fit, I just went to the fabric department and got a yard each of a couple of cotton fabrics that struck my fancy. Cutting a appropriate sized square out of these (measure around your head, add 4 or 5 inches and that's the size you want the diagonal to be).
I found instructions on the web from a member here but that site seems to be down - but there's other instructions around such as http://www.bikernet.com/garage/PageViewer.asp?PageID=284
Keep in mind that keeping your hair controlled isn't just a looks or convenience thing when working around moving machines - it's an important safety consideration too.

Well, it's not quite long enough to worry about when it comes to machines. I mostly use small hand tools (like a hand jigsaw, drill and dremel) for my woodworking and stuff, and with the length of my hair, it's not long enough to catch in the machinery quite yet.
I too, have a problem with the size of such things. I have a fairly big head (please, no comments from the peanut gallery) but it fits with the rest of me (being mistaken for an overstuffed teddy bear by almost every woman i've encountered, and most children too) so I hadn't really given the bandanna thing much consideration. As I mentioned to another commenter, I've been kind of looking at those Skullcap things I've been seeing on some websites, but worry that the size thing will be a problem too (they really shouldn't label things as one size fits all....rotten buggers)
I tried to find welders caps a while ago but didn't have any success (yes - I'm of the "big head" crew as well).

Hi,
I agree. Sprays and gels are not for me either.
I deal best with the awkward phase with a pony tail, bobbie pins on the sides and a ball cap to cover the pins - tucking any loose hair behind ears and under cap. Of course, this is only when I feel tired of loose hair or need to have it out of the way during workouts, etc. Most of the time I leave it free.
I have used spray on the sides in circumstances when I feel the need to look more conservative (suit and tie). Then I pony tail and spray (reluctantly).

I just let mine hang in my eyes lol, but it doesn't bother me and my gf loves it.
