Hoping not to offend those of you who may be into roller sets, but I'd
be interested in hearing from guys who like their hair long and straight, or in various types of plaits (braids).
In the past my hair was just past my shoulders, then I cut it for a
job, something that I regret. I am now letting my hair grow long again. At the moment it is just to my shoulders, and I can't wait until it is much, much longer.
One of my favourite things about having long hair was the way it felt on my bare shoulders. I also loved to wear it in lots of thin braids.
I'd like to hear what other guys like best about having long hair, and what are their favourite ways to wear it. Also, a little history about your long hair might be fun, (i.e. how old were you when you first started wearing long hair, discrimination, or opportunities involving your long hair, different styles worn, etc.)
Perhaps this will help stimulate some messages on this board.
Cheers,
SFGeoff
I'm with you on hair tastes. I like loose long hair and braids mostly, although I sometimes experiment with other styles as well. My hair is now down to my butt, and I love it that way. It has not always been long. As a child, my favorite style was a crew cut, believe it or not. I loved crew cuts because I thought it was cool to have hair sticking straight up in the air. Then, when I got to be about 8 to 10, I combed my hair with a slicked back wave in the front, similar to the Elvis Presley look (although I had no clue who he was at the time -- I just liked the style). The main reason I put my hair in this style was the effect it gave my hair after it dried. It would pretty much stay just like it was when dry. Then I would comb it, and there would be a really nice wave in my hair. My mother also really enjoyed this stage of my hair.
As a teenager, I couldn't stand having my ears showing. My style was typically hair that was about three inches long all over. My hair had just the right amount of wave to make this an attractive style for me. Unfortunately, I lived at school in the dorm, and our dorm father was ex-military. He was the one in charge of haircuts, and just when I thought my hair was getting to be a decent length, it was off to the barber to cut it short enough to stick out sideways, tickle my ears, and generally be unmanageable.
When I started growing a beard, I started growing my hair a little longer. I got married, and my wife told me she thought I'd look good with long hair in the back. She wanted me to have short hair in front and long hair in the back. I have seen this style on some people and think it looks good. However, it just doesn't seem right on me. I decided to simply let my hair grow out. There was a long awkward stage where my hair was several inches long and could not be held back well or at all. Once I could get all my hair into a nice ponytail that was low down (my daughters claim a high up pony tail is a feminine pony tail and that guys should have low pony tails -- OK), I figured I was home free. I just let it keep growing.
Then I had to move and get another job. My recruiter said I should cut my hair, so, reluctantly, I cut it back to about 2 inches all over only to find out that my boss's husband had three foot hair! This made me resolve never to cut my hair for a job again. It was also the last time I have cut my hair (1992).
Now my hair is down to my butt, and I love it. I usually wear it loose and like the way it feels on my back. It's also interesting to slide on it while leaning back on it in the car or a chair, although I don't do this often, because it is surely bad for the hair. I like putting French braids in my hair as well as regular braids. I also am experimenting with other braids, such as 4 strand (flat and round). I want to try a 4 strand French braid, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
I also want to make a hair wrap. Instead of doing it the normal way, wrapping a lock of hair with colored string, I will wrap it with my own hair (retrieved from my brush). I haven't done this yet but hope to do it soon.
I also like twists. One time I put both twists and braids all over my head, making the twists clockwise on one side of my haid and anticlockwise on the opposite side. I like small braids, but they are very time consuming. Fortunately, I have daughters who like braiding. One of the nicest braids I have gotten from my daughter was a three strand braid where each strand was itself a three strand braid.
I had a dream the other night, and I want to try it out some time. I dreamed that I saw a longhaired man who was wearing a tuxedo. Instead of the white frill in the front was his hair in a neatly WOVEN pattern. There must have been about a dozen strands making a flat woven pattern about 3-4 inches wide that covered the buttons of his shirt. Very nice! I don't think my hair is yeat long enough for that, but I may try it soon.
I also like to have my hair long and untied. I am 21 now and have shoulder length hair in the back and down to the nose length in the front. Back in high school I had it down to my shoulder blades in the back and short in the front. I liked it very much. Then came the job where I had to have it short. I got a buzzcut (yuck). Now that I am past that job and considering another....I'm not cutting it. The new job is longhair friendly...so I hope to have mine at least mid back length soon. I have been given the ultimatem(sp) either to cut my hair or find another job. Well, I am finding another job. I felt discriminated by that, because a female co-worker has long hair and nothing was said about it. Now I am made to cut mine...what's the deal ? So I decided it's time to move on to better jobs and longer hair.
My hair right now is in the "pain in the butt" stage. I don't have any pic's of myself, but hope to have one or two soon.
Take care all....

all these posts are fabulous!!! I have mid-back hair and like braids.
Is anyone into trading long hair pics?
I definitely like wearing my hair long and straight, or as straight as it will hang naturally (with a little wave.) What I like best is how long hair looks on me, or on other guys as far as that goes. After that I guess I like the positive comments I get about having "beautiful hair." Then there's the sensual part you mentioned, the feel of my hair on my shoulders and back. It also sounds kinda neat slapping on the back of my leather jacket.
History: By the time I got to high school age, I could exert a little control over how I kept my hair, so my first choice was to get a paige-boy style cut. That stuck with me through college and grad. school. After that I spent several years in S. America where I let the back grow longer like a soccer dude. Unfortunately, like you Geoff, I had to get it cut fairly short at least for a job interview. After about 6 months after getting it cut short, I got it cut into a bob, and from then on let it grow. What a comforting feeling! I have though had a couple of setbacks, being damaged hair which had to be cut off, 4 to 6 inches at a time. Now I'm more careful, and my hair is to about shoulder blade length.
Can't say as I've come across any long hair opportunities. Its usually more a case of intolerance, or people's rejection of something different.
Anyway, so much for my long winded response. Keep going guys.
I much prefer my hair loose...seems more natural. My hair has nice waves in it and parts of it form helical twists all by itself if I let it dry naturally (which I always do).
Jobs in the computer arena, and in Silicon Valley in particular, tend to be universally long-hair-friendly. I am in a research organization and I am not the only long-haired man -- one guy has hair to his ass.
My hair is to the middle of my shoulder blades in back, but short in front. I am now letting the front grow to match the back (all one length). It should be just below my nipples when done; then I can see about letting it grow even longer. I also can't wait until it's that long! :-)
YES!!! And the way it will feel on bare pectorals... I also like the wan another man's long hair feels on my bare pectorals.
I've never done that, but seen a guy who had it like that once -- it was NICE!
I was in grad school (age 24) in 1992 when I decided to let it grow in back. (I wish I had let it all grow then. DOH!) I was kind of nervous about going back to work once school was over, but nobody said anything.
What do you mean by "opportunities?"

First of all, great topic and great board!
I first started to grow my hair long in high school - I kept it about
shoulder length or a little longer. Then in college, I let it it get
to the bottom of my shoulder blades. After graduation, I also made the
mistake of cutting it short, in hopes of getting a job. I found one
where it didn't matter, so I've been growing it out ever since. Its
now just about to my elbows. My dream is to grow it to my waist.
My favorite things about having it long are, obviously, the way it
looks and the way it feels (and makes me feel). I like the idea of
being able to wear it differently every day. I try never to wear it the
same two days in a row. My favorites are a real high pony tail, two
pony tails (low), and two braids. I also love the feeling of letting
it down at the end of the day!
Some of mine:
I like the versatility of being able to change my hair with my moods;
As Victor mentioned in his Mutual Admiration post, I find myself engaged in "hair talk" topics with other women many places I go;
I like the feel as others do;
I do like having the ability to wear accessories - combs, scrunchies, etc. Whenever I get a suit tailored, I save the excess material for matching scrunchies - really gets complements!
Keeps me warmer in the winter :)
I am an 18 yr. old college student and I started growing my hair when I was a sophomore in high school. I decided to grow my hair because I got sick and tired of the same short hair ive always had. It was weird at first because my hair was almost like a crew cut...
After about a year my hair was up to my ears already and I wasn't really satisfied yet. When I went home to the Philippines for a visit I got mixed reactions from my grandma and my aunts. My grandma loved it while my aunt despised it. She said I looked like a hoodlum. Anyways I listened to my grandma and I kept on letting it grow until I had it all evened out. Now I think my hair looks gorgeous. It is all evened out..like Anthony Kiedis from the Chili Peppers but shorter.....and the ladies love it...they love to pull and grab my hair when I make love to them...
