I found this site Google searching "Mens long hair styles". I was thinking about getting my hair cut, well trimmed, now I am not. I started growing my hair (from nearly shaven) 3 years ago, it grows fast. I am having troubles with brushing it out, I have thick semi wavy hair and the ends tangle/break.
For maintenance reasons I was thinking about some kind of trim. Then I looked through your pictures and decided against it...let it grow, put up with the hassles.
I am self employed as a sawmill owner/woodworker/tool sharpener. I don't run into much stereotyping like I did when I was a kid with long hair. I guess maybe in part because I am 40 and pretty gray, or maybe it is just I deal with different type people now. (I used to have a "real job" and had to keep my hair cut short)
I think some of you are probably "earth first" types, don't bash sawmilling unless you visit my site, I am a green guy.
I just wanted to pop in and say hello, and thanks for helping decide not to cut my hair. I figure it will be waist long by this time next year.
Hi Daren,
First of all, I would like to extend a hearty welcome to you, and am delighted that you have found the hyperboard. It really is a community like no other on the internet, and everyone here is like members of a big family.
You are blessed with a great head of thick wavy hair, and there is NOTHING wrong with a little gray at all. It has always been my belief that natural is always better. Your hair looks in good condition from what I can see, and I am very plesaed to hear that you are planning to grow it to your waist or longer.
Take care, and looking to see you around more often!
David
I notice you did a custom pick guard for a Tele. Have you ever made guitar or bass bodies?
No, well sort of. I built one "guitar" (for decoration, I am not a guitar maker, it was a decorative art thing)I can't find a picture of it complete. I made the top and back out of curly maple, steam bent the sides from curly walnut and made the neck from curly walnut too. I made it for a friend of mine, she is a decorator.
I used to sell alot of wood to luthiers. I just do not play, nor do I have the patients to built a proper guitar (and maybe not the skill?).
I know many dudes who do make them, one makes some really nice basses and another builds great acoustic guitars , they always try to talk me into making one. They say they will walk me through it and help. I just don't have the interest. I love listening to guitar, but like doing it when I am building other things.
I have made a ton of those pick guards. And sold many solid body blanks. I kinda got out of that though it seemed to be snowballing (one guy would tell another...) and it was taking all my time. I get bored doing one thing, I like to mix it up.

That is a beautiful top!
This is the back. Those are the only 2 pictures I have of that little project. (computer crash, lost alot of stuff)

Hi Daren,
I enjoyed looking at your site. I grew up in a small Illinois town, Eldorado, quite a ways south of you. I looked quite a bit like you do until the last year, when I decided to grow the beard out. I'm now retired, having spent most of my working years as a construction engineer here in San Francisco. Moved here in '79.
Gray long hair is cool. I'm 61 and no one ever hassles me about my hair either. Truth is, people know an older guy just won't take any crap about it so they don't bother to sling any. [grin]
Welcome to the hyperboard! There are several of us gray haired guys on here, and we always are glad to see more!
Bill
WOW! Super cool hair! it looks great gray and all! Keep up the great work! Take care back there and the tree work to is cool. Wish ya the best.
Welcome Daren !
I am glad you decided not to cut that fantastic hair (much less with the "weapon of destruction" you are holding ! HA!
Hang around this board, you will find that there are folks well up in years with lot of gray, white, salt & pepper hair that really look great. Yes, we older guys do not get the hassle that the younger ones get.....
You are fortunate to be able to do the type of work you do at home....I seem to be enjoying working in my shop these days considerable more than going into my "real job" HA!
Take Care and Thanks for Sharing

hey there, glad we prevented you from cutting in time : )
Weeeee! Another assimilated into the longhair collective. Resistence is futile indeed! That hair looks so cool, glad you let it grow, and that you are continueing on your longhair journey. welcome to the hyperboard!

Hi there! Welcome to the site.
I'm glad you decided to keep your hair--I think it's partly what makes us unique as people, only it shows on the outside as well.
As for having problems with tangles, do you use conditioner? I personally only comb my hair out after it's wet and after using conditioner. Otherwise I only finger comb it, and keep it down or tied back. I never use brushes.
About being a tree hugger, that's great. I come from a line of those.
My grandpa (who left us in 1997) was a cabinet maker and a local lumber store owner his whole life.
My dad is one of the few certified arborists in the entire state of Michigan, and he even attends national meetings on the subject.
And I'm an aspiring luthier! So someone has to cut the timber!!
Speaking of which, what kinds of timber do you have available..? I'm always looking for 16 x 20+ pieces of hardwood that are 2" thick, for electric guitar bodies. Mahogany, alder, ash, cherry, and many others are nice. Or flamed pieces of wood and veneers, as well.
Well I suppose I should look at your site first.
Anyway, welcome!
Earth First? Feh! I've described myself as a "passionate moderate". I'm also a tree hugger (see the pic, haha). I'm not involved with timber either, but heartily support *sustainable* forestry, which sounds like what you're doing.
It's so cool that you claim timber from urban settings. When I lived in Virginia and was just out of school, I used to get free firewood all the time from people who lost limbs in winter wind storms. I would say "when you live in a forest, you shouldn't have to pay for wood", and pretty much all of Virginia is naturally forest.
One time a tree that at least 6 feet wide fell on a house there, ruining the whole upper floor. They had to bring in a *crane* to remove it. Part of the result was a log that was as long as a flatbed semi, and at least 6 feet wide even at the narrowest. I asked what they were going to do with it, if they were going to make it into a fine piece of furniture since it was such an amazing specimen. Nobody knew, and I always wondered where they hauled it and what they did with it.
I'm also a tree hugger (see the pic, haha).
You are going to need longer arms...that's a heck of a tree.
I like these positive stories thanks. So often we get the I cut my hair and now I'm sad posts nice to see something different. Glad you found us and hope you hang around.

Welcome Darin, you have a great head of hair. It is so good
you did not cut it.
So you are having trouble with tangles? Split ends are a
common cause of this problem. Trimming as little as 1/4"
off the ends can help a lot. You will not even see a
difference in length. Find someone that you can trust
who will trim only 1/4" and no more. You can even trim
splits yourself one at a time. You can do it while
watching TV.
You mention using a brush. Have you tried switching to
a wide tooth comb? A wide tooth comb will separate
tangles with a lot less snagging than a brush. With
proper care your hair will easily grow to your waist.
