The best times to trim long hair are
on the third full moon of the month, during any month that does not have an r, a, or u in it, orduring any month that has a Friday the Thirteenth and does not start on Sunday

Right on man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope this is of help to you.
Depends on what you are comfortable with.
Not every long-haired guy has to be a zealot like some on this board.
Cutting it while trying to "grow out" a short (in parts) hair cut WILL extend the awkward phase. It may also (as with me) keep the hair neat and un-awkward, assuming you actually communicate with the stylist and they respect your desires.
I chose to keep cutting the bottom part of the back until the front came within an inch or two. Now I am just letting it grow, until about shoulder length, then maintaining that length.
