I was wondering what kind of jobs/careers everyone had if they wanted to share. My parents are forever telling me to cut my hair or I'll never get a good job, but that's just bunk, yes?
Right now I manage a Gap, taking a year off between undergrad (anthropology) and grad school (or becoming famous).
Myspace
General Contractor
Union Electrician in Chicago
Government Scientist, side business as a Piano Technician
Corporate purchasing manager for a manufacturing company
Clinical Psychologist - Currently studying to become a Psychoanalist.
Awesome. We need to team up some time in the future. Psychology is going to be a great help for my Economics studies into rationality and other things...
Great! I'm at your service for any help I could give.

Good question, Rafi. Thank you for posting. Here are jus' SOME o/t smatterings of "slaves" (jobs) I've had to report to:
Law clerk w/ prestigious NYC law firm
Collection agency accounts supervisor
Guy Friday of a typosetter house/design concern
Stock boy of cosmetics dept. of national chain store
Tee-shirts and jewellery vendor at outdoor flea market
Video store clerk
Foot messenger for courier service
Telephone dispatcher FOR messengers at another courier service
Summer theatre stock performer
Rock band singer
Graphic designer
Greenscaper
Nowadays, though, I'm concentrating on my art (painting) since it's the winter again. Be it known that none of these careers (ahem!) were impeded by my hair length, or lack of it. Nice snowfall we had here in the Northeast in the Lower Hudson Valley just last night. Good luck w/ your career, too, Rafi!
Best wishes in longhair'd AND future stardom camaraderie,
Quenyan
I'm going to study Economics in the UK at undergraduate level in a Uni next year. Hopefully Cambridge (if a little luck comes my way).
Wow going to a top notch posh university then..:-)
Cheers,
John.B
CAMBRIDGE!!! Best of luck to you on getting in. What a great opportunity. I envy you.
My Interview is this Friday. I'm quite worried, to say the least, lol.
Tier 2 manager for the Pre Paid Debit department for Metavante, basically doing technical and escalated customer support issues for a variety of pre paid debit and credit cards that we manage for many different companies.
Rafi, A popular reoccurring thread but I don't think Ive ever responded to one. So here goes. Jobs I've had while I had long hair. Hmmmmm! Lumberjack, Model, Waiter, Greenskeeper, oh and of course my present position, Corrections Officer.
peace, jonalbear
You did modelling? Any pics left?
derf26, I modeled for figure drawing classes in college 3O to 33 years ago. 5 bucks an hour back then was awesome pay back then for standing around with little to nothing on. If any drawings still exist, I imagine they are wrapped in brown paper an neatly tucked under the beds of 50 to 55 year old women. lol
peace, jonalbear
THAT sort of modelling?!
I was thinking more along the lines of WITH clothes, otherwise I wouldn;t have asked for the photos, lol! But very nice, and well done. Don't think I myself would enjoy standing in the cold with no clothes on while people stared at me. What if I got a boner?
admin clerk for 6 years, barman for 12 months, and now a postman.
While I'm a student right now, I've worked as a software engineer while growing out my hair. Hair was not an issue at my workplace. Right now, I'm hoping to go to grad school and take up a career in academia (within the cognitive sciences).
To balance this and assure those setting out with long hair that it is not a barrier to a 'good' job (whatever that might be and probably in parents' minds) Company Director and chairman of a trade association.
I work full time as a computer tech at a university in Montreal.
Have a good day,
Georges
I work at a below minimum wage job as a messenger throughout NYC. Don't feel bad for me I can come in mostly whenever I like.
I envy you for this: you probably have or are getting an expert knowledge of your way around NYC that few people have. I wish I had that.
I could tell you a lot, like cutting in front of an old lady on the subway steps blocking everyone to get to the next train. The bums and the homeless people who will harass you every chance they get. The people who hand out flyers, ohh how I hate them. On the plus side I can tell you which train is likely to get you around manhattan faster depending on where you go. The difference between 939 3rd ave and 120 6th ave and I can tell you the cross streets accurate by 3 or 4 blocks. Some of the things that go on at Union Square, many guys in Skirts(even if it is a kilt by definition it is a skirt) and Long hair lol. I could also tell you neighborhoods where you would rather not be if you had a choice.
If I ever go to NYC, I'll send you a mail asking for details on where I should and SHOULDN'T go, lol.
I am an analytical chemist, and work in a lab with a lot of high tech equipment, several million dollars worth, to be exact.
David
You look kinda happy there, surrounded by all that high-tech expensive equipment. Does the fact that retirement is around 8 months away have anything to do with it? :-)
Carol
Hi Carol,
As always, it is great to see you again, and I hope your virus is getting better every day. I guess I was fairly happy looking in that photo, and in that photo, taken in early May, I actually still had 15 months left to retirement. Now that not only is the hair longer than in that photo, but the months left to retirement are down to 8, I am even happier than I was in that photo, lol!
Take care,
David
I'm a piano teacher in my own studio.
Roffles! I guess it must depend on what job you're doing. I'm a performer - singer/pianist/dancer/acrobat/actor/anything I get thrown onto a stage for. My hair is actually a huge asset to my career as it sets me apart from the rest of the crowd, giving me opportunities others would need a wig for. I've received MANY compliments on it AT my workplace. In some cases a converstaion about my hair has given me roles in different shows.
Like I said, I think it's simply a case of apples and onions, where you live, and what job you're interested in.
Just checking my vocabulary:
Gentleman of leisure? Is that brittish for unemployed?
No, it means that I don't have to work because I have an independent income. It's a very dated phrase - I was being deliberately pompous!
I'm an IT intern at a local business and a potential (just submitted application) employee at Quality Markets. Going to college (either Pitt or Penn State) in fall 2008 to major in computer engineering.
PS: I saw that someone had chosen Matt B as their name, i didn't see that until it was way down on the hyperboard. My new name will be Gumja (random thing my friends call me). I've been thinking about changing it for a while now, now seems to be the opportune moment.
By day I look after those computer networks and support the "lovely" software that comes out of Redmond WA!
By night a semi-professional photographer and music promoter and things related to the rock and metal gendre.
Cheers,

Patent agent
Night Manager at a 24 hour supermarket.
They had a rule "conservative hairstyle and no beard"
but I have been doing this kind of work since the dawn of time so they overlooked that cause they wanted my experience, and there has been no mention of hair since.
Kevin
Nice, congratulations! It makes me happy when I hear things like this.
Pipe organ technician by day, jazz musician on the weekends. All of people I've met so far in the pipe organ business have all had short hair styles. Visually, it's a rather conservative field. My boss [short hair] believes in the 'To each, his own' approach. He doesn't have a problem with it. I always tail it at work. It's the only way I can get anything done! :)
Here in the San Francisco bay area, I think I'm the only jazz musician around here with long hair [not counting the female jazz musicians]. It's nice to be different!

Really?! Wow! I find this extremely interesting. I was actually researching such fields as organ and piano building/repair about a week ago, as I was somewhat interested in what the field is like.
I'm a part-time/semi professional luthier, dealing mostly with electric guitars atm. But I love ALL instruments. So naturally, I find your profession very intriguing.
I'd love to chat sometime.
I'm an electrical engineering student, who will be graduating next semester. W00t!

Mine was institutional foodservice, mostly in the healthcare end, but I have done the hospitality end. Line cook, prep cook, pastry chef and baker, server, supervisor, dietetics, etc.
I am no longer employed due to disability issues. This followed an auto accident in which I was struck by a drunk driver.
Incidently, institutional foodservice is longhair friendly. You only need to use restraints, nets, and hats while working. I have worked with many longhaired and bearded men of various ages over the years I was employed
Carol
I am a school teacher (elementary panel, teaching half-time Rotary music and half-time as a Kindergarten teacher). I love my job!
(When I got hired, though, I admit that I was a short hair and I can not sure whether or not sporting my currently developing curly manlocks might have swayed the interview to my detriment...there really aren't many long-haired male teachers...at least not that I've seen.)
I'd not worry if I were you, though, because your hair is long-enough to look established and part of your style. It is certainly not in an awkward stage or looking unkept.
Best of luck in your career!
Shawn (Mr.Crow)
One of the best teachers I ever had in high school was a long hair (an ex-hippie). He was also one of the toughest teacher's you'd ever meet when it came to grades. By toughest I mean that he gave out grades accordning to a proper C average rather than swaying with the current trend of excessive grade inflation. I guess the school wasn't happy with him because he didn't give out enough A's (and thus making them look bad on paper) so they fired him. It had nothing to do with his hair though.
database manager.
Electrical engineer and musician.
Both jobs are long hair friendly.
Graphic / Web Designer and Project Manager for a large company and I do marketing also. Also have my own side business doing the same!
I bartend at a very suburban and white-collar bar (not so longhair friendly, contrary to what one might expect at a bar), although I am on the verge of heading off to graduate school in parts unknown. I eventually want to become a research biologist (very longhair friendly).
It is very possible to get a good job with long hair. The most important thing is to do what you do VERY WELL. Then nobody will question you.
PhD student.
I'm going to finish soon, and to throw myself in job hunting in a couple of months.
WITH near-tailbone hair and a 8 inch goatee..we'll see!
My dad used to say that but after some time he thought up another phrase...
I'm cramming math at the time to study either molecular biology, Cell biology or biochemistry allthough chemistry isn't my strong side I'm trying to hop over the hill by studyin' hard eneugh to go to a UK uni...
I'm the "Obesity Prevention Grant Coordinator," working for a local (county-level) government health department.

i won't say what i do, because us girls can do whatever we want with long hair. instead i shall list my longhaired male friends and what they do.
joe - graphic designer for taser international (he works with current and former police and militarty personnel, and he is the only one male there with long hair. they don't care.)
aaron - insurance underwriter. also in school to become a pharmacist.
jonny - computer tech/teacher for an elementary school
andy - graphic designer
brandon - manager of a call center
jeremy - commercial painter and yoga teacher
flicka - restaurant owner
jim - business owner (clothing design)
john - restaurant owner
kevin - photographer and eccentric old guy
mike - business owner (tie dye)
nolan - business owner (clothing design)
steve - computer programmer
i didn't realize that so many of my male friends had long hair. this is awesome! the majority of them are quite sucessful.
PhD student in biophysics. So current and future scientist...future professor. Of course, I've seen a good selection of longhaired male medical students as well so perhaps long hair is breaking into the medical profession as well...
I'm about to get two engineering degrees.
I've met several older professional engineers who have long hair and even had a few professors in that vein. One had his Ph. D.
I don't think long hair gets in the way of professional development, at least not at the extremes of high and low end. Perhaps when climbing some dull corporate ladder you may come accross some old crows who have been there for 30 years and have been worn down by time to not like anything different (not all older people are like this!!)
I've read about many a business-men who proliferated despite their adverse dress and styles and business methods. The best way to move on and upward is to let your results and work speak more volumes than the crows can shake a stick at!!!
I'm a BIOS engineer. It's like a software engineer, except it's firmware.
Q. What do computer programmers wear under their clothes?
A. Software!
Believe it or not, I'm taking my steps towards being a movie producer and will be flying to Europe to work on two projects.
I am associated with Jonathan Krane and Beau Rogers with "The Edge." http://EDGE.US.COM
I can't divulge more than this, though, since a lot of the info I know is VERY sensitive and I don't want to lose my job by leaking any of it out.
At least I have the privilege to humorously say that "I can tell you, but then I'd have to kill you." :-p
Plus, this gives me every excuse to let my hair down as it will definitely help me to keep warm there. - Reinhart

Urban logger, sawmill owner, wood worker, professional tool sharpener.
I am a licensed master plumber (3rd generation)I worked for a mechanical engineering company as a job supervisor, got bored and started my own company. Then in my mid 30's I decided I didn't like it anymore, so I closed the doors and headed another direction. Since I was already self employed it did not really matter, all that other stuff was a "job". Wood and urban logging is my career now, the money can suck at times (compared to other more lucrative things I have done) but I have never been happier.
