There was an earlier post asking about contries where it is very common for men to wear long hair. I found out about a small town/city in Ecuador called Otavalo, from a couple of fellows that come from the place, all longhairs. The town is about two hours north of Quito, the capital. Aparently it has become quite a visited place because of art.
There most of the men, contrary to other regions in the country, the wear their hair long, waist-length and longer. This is a tradition that dates back a long time, I was told. So the men will be seen moving around with their terminal-length manes, and ever since they're quite young, boys have always worn long hair.
The "problem" now a days, so I was told by these folks, is that some young men don't value it start cutting it off in order to wear more "fashionable" styles. This obviously causes some grief in the family.
Thought I'd passe it on for if ever anyone goes to Ecuador, they might want to check out the place.

How refreshing! To see parents upset over short hair instead of long!

I know of another long hair community (on men) and that is none other than the Sikhs.
Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion issued five requirements for Sikh men, one of them being they must not cut their hair. (Don't ask me the other four)
Sikh men gather their hair into a sort of pony tail and wrap it into a knot on top of their head.
Male Sikh adults generally tie a cloth their familiar cloth turban over their heads, while Sikh boys and teenagers will generally make do with their hair tied in a knot.
Some Sikh men decided to cut their hair instead and we non-Sikhs in Malaysia call them "modern Sikhs." Some so called modern Sikhs may still wear a turban.

So the men have long hair but no one ever SEES it?! What a pity to waste such a community resource. Although some of us may sniff or feel hair, long hair is mostly EYE candy. So I am not exactly excited to learn of the Sikhs. I have seen a number of them, and I didn't even know they were longhairs.

Well, its not for me to make value judgements on whether Sikhs hide their long hair or not.
The topic was long haired communities and I submitted by contribution.
I do agree with Bill that long hair is eye candy, since I myself do admire long beautiful hair very much.
It is quite possible that many of the Sikh men Bill might see may not in fact have long hair under their turbans.
As I said in my earlier posting, many Sikh men in Malaysia actually cut their hair and don't wear turbans (ie what we call "modern Sikhs."
However, I may have seen a few Sikhs who wear their hair down and don't wear a turban. But I would then not normally be able to recognise them as Sikhs, unless I hear the "Singh" in their name.
In fact I think I may have seen one with really beautiful long hair in the Hard Rock Cafe in Singapore.

Here in Peru ther is a religious group whose male members have to grow their hair long as well as their beards. Women have to cover their head like nuns.
These longhaired and long-bearded men usually go to work wearing a small cap under which they put all of their hair. You can also see them wearing a ponytail and less common are braids. This religious group encourages their people to leave the city and go to live near the frontiers in the jungle. Over there they wear their hair untouched and it can be waist long in many cases. i saw that once on tv. Here in the city they usually cover their hair with caps
