When Taliban soldiers first arrived they
smashed every television set they could find. As
they approached his home, Muhammad Asif, a
young shopkeeper, rushed to bury his 17-inch TV
and VCR in the backyard.
Good to see them talking about growing their hair long. Has
anyone ever tried using a TV and VCR that has been buried in
the ground? Does Afghanastan still have electricity?
Last I heard Afghanastan was living in the stone age, everything
was destroyed in past wars, nothing was rebuilt.

Perhaps the bright lad wrapped his electronics in a nice, tight waterproof plastic bag.
As for the electricity, I really would find it hard to believe that the US would not long ago have knocked out the electrical grid in Kabul. So, perhaps this lad also has a small electrical generator.
From what I understand, those things are pretty popular in the Third World as the municipal electric sources are unreliable at best. Small portable electric generators like you see at a hardware store are not too expensive even in places like Kabul (before the bombings at least.)
I would also hope that for their sake, we manage to keep the Taliban out of Kabul. The folks who shave their beards would literally be "marked men" if the city changed hands again - and it has already gone back and forth between the Taliban and Northern Alliance several times. Yes, it is an expression of freedom and confidence but I would hate for that to be spoiled.

By the way, that reminds me of the Nazi collaborators who were beaten and had their heads shaved after World War ][ when the government changed! (Wow, talking about mob rule!) Similar revenge attacks against former government supporters have also happened in Iran (after the Shah) and Serbia.
