I was working my way through an apprenticeship to be a master plumber (drag 5 years of trade school, 2 nights a week). I worked for a mechanical company when I first started that ran plumbing/heating service. I was a shorthair, they made me cut my hair. Not the company, the apprenticeship board of trustees.
So I get sent out on a call to a Fortune 100 company. The Vice President of the company was having temp control problems in his office (it was so big it had its own heating cooling system). I was taken to his office and introduced. He was setting behind this huge and beautiful desk organizing some things into a folder. He was wearing undoubtedly a $3000 suit. His hair was mostly white and "slicked" back. We talked for a few minutes while he was seated, him telling me the problem and me telling him what I was going to do to fix it. He explained he was a little late for a meeting, and that meeting may take 2+ hours. I said I thought I would be done and gone before he got back.
He stood to shake my hand as he left. As he left the room I turned around to see...a white braid as big as a baseball bat ! It hung down past the bottom of his tailored suit jacket. I was a kid and thought, cool ! Some day when I am old and gray I am going to have one of those too.
20 years have passed, I am now graying and working on that baseball bat sized braid.

Daren, A neat story. Goes to show "you can't judge a book by it's cover". Good luck with your white braid!

Hey Daren,
I loved reading this story, --- and I couldn't agree more with that as a goal for myself as well!
By the way, sorry to be so late at chiming in a big, hearty WELCOME to you!! So glad you found us here. This is such a great place, and wonderful people!
And, before I forget to also say.... You have some AWESOME hair there yourself!!!

Great story and definitely an inspiration!
That's a great story - I'm a long way from a braid, much less a baseball sized one, but that's my goal. I work for a large corporation, in a suit/tie world, and do stick out a bit. Here's a pic from September:
