Hey all,
I've noticed the whole idea of balding is on my mind a lot lately. I guess when you're caring for your hair more you just think about it more, but the idea of losing it I find really troubling, to the point that I'm checking my hairline virtually everyday for any possible changes.
Now, I would think it were a normal concern if I had thinning hair at all, or any recession, but I have neither. I'm almost 22 at the moment, and I, as far as I can tell, retain all the hair on the temples that seems to be where the MPB begins with the small V's that gradually recede.
It continues to worry me though because the hair on my mother's side, simply, there is no nice way to put it, stinks. My mom has extremely fine, thin hair, and her mother's hair is so fine it looks like cotton candy, and I wish I were exaggerating there. All the men on that side, are entirely bald. But, they all went bald extremely early, usually having noticeable hair loss in high school.
On my father's side, we have virtually the opposite story. My father, at 57 has a full, thick head of wavy black/graying hair, as does most of the males on that side, with one exception that I can think of.
I have two brothers, both of which have no MPB, and are at 32 and 37 respectively, yet we do not share the same mother.
My own hair is, from what I can tell, thick and wavy, much like my father's. I've been told before that I have nothing to worry about, but then again I've been told you get your hair genetics from your mother, although I've also head it can come from either parent, so I really don't know who to believe, or how to stop worrying about it!
Sorry to sound neurotic,
Austin
Hey Austin,
Balding is a common topic on the board, of which I'm sure you're well aware. It's pretty normal, I think, for guys our age to be checking for any signs of it, especially with a family history of it occurring. Of course, at the first hints of it, you could always turn to Rogaine or other anti-balding agents. However, from what I've seen, it seems to me like you're pretty well set for now, so enjoy what you've got and just let it grow. See you around... ;)

Hey, don't worry about it right now.
Right now, enjoy it. u never know, u might get lucky and not bald at all.
just don't worry so much, that'll make it fall out. stress always does.
To worry about MPB will do you no good. If you have no signs of MPB then it may be that you never will. You can receive the genes for MPB from your father, or mother. If you do begin to see signs of MPB it is likely that Propecia would help you greatly since the genetic expression of the genes responsible for MPB seems rather insignificant in your case. Generally speaking, if a man is going to experience extreme MPB then he will begin to show signs early on in his life; usually around his late teen years. Try not to worry so much.
Jeffrey.
Hey Austin,
I'm 54, --- and, although a bit of a receding hairline, it could be a hell of a lot worse! To worry about it, though, is a waste of time.... I used to be worried; but, gave it up for Lent (and I'm not even Catholic - lol)!!
I do understand, though, that for those of us that are "hair-aholics", even the loss of a few hairs is a very unwelcome loss...
Some of the longhairs I admire the most, believe it or not, are the guys who are bald; but, grow their manes long, anyway. I once met a guy who was COMPLETELY bald on top and in front; but what hair he did have, went all the way down to his KNEES (and he looked damn GOOD that way)!!!! That was a total inspiration for me, --- and I have never worried about baldness since.
