Hi all, I am a big fan of this forum, and many of you guys are my role models and my inspiration for the long journey of growing my hair. I want to re-grow my hair after cutting it last year to get to college, now Im determined to grow it again, but as you all know by now its curly/wavy, last time I grew it I just wore a cotton hat throughout my journey, although this method saved me a lot of hassle but it wasnt presentable, which is why I was forced to cut it in the first place. So after the long intro I get to my question, what products will suite my hair type i.e. shampoos and conditioners. Secondly my hair get dry very easily this is where my hair puffs up and starts afro-ish, therefore is there any way of keeping my hair hydrated apart from rinsing it with cold water every now and then? Thank you all and I hope I will learn from the experience of you,
P.s. is there any other advice that could help me, please dont hesitate to comment
Hi Curli,
I'm glad to hear you are growing again. You will find great support here. I have thick curly hair like you. I've been growing my hair, from a shaved head, for a little over six months. Through trial and error and the great support and advice of this board, I have found a routine and products that work for me.
I have stopped frequent shampooing, opting for just washing with lukewarm water once or twice a week and conditioning with Infusium 23 followed by a rinse with cold water. I pat dry with a towel and use Pantene ProV Smooth and Sleek leave-in conditioner. Then I finger comb and use my wide tooth comb to detangle. After combing I shake it out with my best head banging movements.
After it is almost dry, but still damp, I scrunch and pull out with my fingers to make it even. If I want a shorter more tidy look I pat it down. If I want less curl I brush it flat while wet and it dries with much less curl and somewhat less volume.
Every styling product I have used seems to coat my hair and make it dry, so I stopped using them. I do use a touch of oil (nut based) or Alberto VO5 (lanolin based) if it seems dry. I use Infusium23 shampoo infrequently, avoiding it as much as possible.
Daily tyling is easy. I comb it in the morning, which poofs it out into a big hair helmet! Then I use a spray mister with water to dampen it and activate the curl! I've found less is more with products. My hair is shiny and healthy. I hope this routine will continue to work as my grows.
Good luck with your hairy journey, let us know how it is goin'/growin'.
Peace,
Don
Just have patience, my friend. I have the same type of hair that grows out as opposed to down, but eventually gravity will prevail!
