Hey, long time lurker here, there are alot of lurkers who like me dont post i think ;p.
But while growing long hair, ive also warmed to the idea of growing a long beard aswell, i suppose the look most assiosiated with "wizards" from fantasy books/movies lol.
What ime wondering is..
How long can most people grow their beards?
How fast to beards grow in comparison to head hair?
Oh and i thought ide include a picture of the guy whos supposed to have had the longest beard. I didnt think this was possible lol. xp
I have no experience about growing beards, so I can't help there, but who is that man?!
The man in the photo is Hans Langseth. when he died in 1922 his beard measured 17.5 feet. The beard is on display at the Smithsonian museeum in Washington DC. And yes his beard was dreaded.
We have several guys here who have very long, amazing beards, --- our Tech Crew Chief, Bill, being one of 'em! Also Victor, the Founder of this hyperboard, has a beard long enough to sit on!!!
This pic does indeed show a beard WAAAAAY longer than I ever imagined possible, --- and it looks so well taken care of, to boot! Too bad his hair is as short as it is, though, --- that looks like an amazing mane he could have!
Remionds me of when I used to be a camp councellor at a Summer Camp back when I still lives in Illinois...
We used to sing this silly song to entertain the kids on daytime bus trips to the beach. All I rememb er is this part of the song:
"When Grandpa goes in swimming,
No bathing suit he wears,
He just wrpa his whiskers 'round him,
And then he goes in gare!"
CHORUS:
"Oh, they're always in the way!
The cows eat them for hay!
They hide the dirt
On Grandpa's shirt,
They're always in the way,
--- Hey!!"
Thanks for the intersting post, Symbolic!

I meant to type out: "WRAPS", not "wrpa"... Oh, well, next time I'll PROOFREAD (lol)!!

I guess I've been nominated to answer this one.... [grin]
Site logs indicate you are right. We have more lurkers than guys posting. Of course, if no one posted, no one would lurk, so it's always good to see lurkers posting!
I'm really liking my long beard! It is awesome when it blows in the wind, it keeps me warm on cold days, and it sets me apart from the crowd. Cool that you would like the experience of growing one, too!
This varies a lot from one man to another. Results with facial hair are much more varied than those we see with scalp hair. There is much less stigma with being bald on the face than on the scalp, so many people don't realize the pervasiveness of sparseness of hair on the face. Men who don't grow thick beards often cut them off and no one thinks much about it. This can leave a casual observer with the notion that most men can grow thick long beards if they want to. This is not the case.
Beards on some men will only grow an inch or two in length. Other men will have large areas that are sparse or bald. These problems are so common that it is tough to answer your question about "most" people, since a majority probably has problems getting a beard like mine which you see above. Beard growth is also dependent on one's ethnic background to a large extent. Asiatic people, including American Indians, often can't grow much facial hair, and black people often get beard growth too kinky to manage. Therefore, most really large beards are seen on Caucasians, although that racial group is a minority on the planet.
As for Caucasians, the length one can get varies a lot more than one sees with scalp hair. It is not unusual at all for men to find they can only grow two to four inches of beard. A few men can grow it down to their belt buckle, but that is quite uncommon. And the other side of the coin is that some bald men can grow very long beards. What you get on top and on the face are not necessarily related!
I've found my beard has grown at the same rate as my scalp hair has, just shy of half an inch a month. The photo you see above represents 17 months of growth, starting with an inch-long beard. Since it takes two months to grow an inch of hair, you could say the photo is one of a 19-month beard.
My scalp hair has not been trimmed in ten years, and its longest strands peter out in the 20-inch range, so it is definitely terminal. I do not know if my beard is approaching terminal yet or not. At present it has a lot of 8 inch hairs but only a few reach 10 inches.
It looks like he has a lot of dreading going on from his gut on down. Dreading involves the entanglement of hairs that have already had their roots fall out, so it is not indicative of how long one's hair will actually grow. One can grow a dreadlock for as long as one wishes.

Thanks very much for the answers, I hope i can grow a beard like yours :), but even 2-4 inches isnt so bad i guess.
High!
...and among all Caucasians, Afghans truly grow the most awesome beards (that's what originally sparked my enthusiasm for Afghanistan)! Perhaps rivalled only by the Ainu, a semi-Europid race on Japan's Hokkaido island!
The beard of my loved one now is about 12 inches...
Same with me, sad to say...
See you in Khyberspace!
Yadgar
