Hello everyone.
First time here... *puts on his "I'm a newbie" dunce cap on* Anyway... I've been growing out my hair for about a year and I have a few questions. :) Here's the big list:
1. I'm trying to get my hair into the ponytail style formation... Anyone have a guide for me on how to do it?
2. Should I stop washing my hair with soap?
If yes...
2A. If I stop washing with soap, will my hair look dirty?
3.Any tips for avoiding knots? I get a lot of them.
Grow it out until you can gather all your hair into a tail.
Wash it every 1-2 weeks with shampoo, then just rinse it every day. Nah, doesn't look dirty.
I'm sure others can answer this question better, but try to avoid brushing against the direction of the hair shaft. If you do, you'll instantly have tangles.

Wash it every day. Tried skipping a day and only rinsing. The hair
looks terrible. I have waist lenght hair and it looks like crap if
I don't wash it every day.
Um, if you're washing with soap as in "bar soap," then no, you don't want to do this . . . soap has a bit of lye in it, and over time will make the hair look cruddy. Better to use a very mild shampoo. Personally, I use Pantene . . .
Ponytail? Using regular elastic bands will tend to pull a few hairs out each time you use 'em. Best thing I've found so far are the cloth covered elastic bands made by Goody (I think) and sold at discount dept stores. Usually Sally's has stretchy plastic hair ties, small bags of 250 for a dollar or so, and these won't pull hair out, but don't stay in place as well as the other type. YMMV . . .
Basically, you can gather your hair in the top of the back, or at the bottom.
Knots? I keep a bit of cyclomethicone based Shine goo on my hair, and never get 'em. Not a problem . . .

Is there anything much worse you can use than soap on your hair? I don't think so. Man, unless you want your hair like wire, don't use soap... that's why they make shampoo. And no, don't wash it everyday. See how long you can go without washing it.
