So I ask a hair dresser to cut my hair, just to basically thin it out, and leave as much length as possible, thinking it would leave all of the length in tact, and what happens? She takes the sides almost completely off, leaving me with only an inch at the back. Set me back a year!!!!
She told me that letting her trim it will make it grow faster, but this is the second time she has done this!!! I'm keeping her away from my hair. I had such a great head of hair about 3 months ago, now this girl comes along, I specifically ask her to just thin in it, and she hacks almost all of it off. I feel so depressed over it all. :(
well this isn't the first time so why would you go back to the same person
Lol Once bitten twice shy like, Thats not happening EVER AGAIN, one chance only, Some people never learn by there mistakes
Its a good question Ceaser Why would they because I sure wouldnt give them another chance.

We hear these stories so often and hair thinning is not always the way. If read correctly why did you go to the same person of they did exactly the same last time. Thinning only cuts hairs further up the shaft and it will still take time for them to grow long again.
If you want longhair just let it grow for a couple of years and keep away from trims it's quite easy. As for trimming and making it grow faster that's an old wives tail and not true!
I think the moral is not go to that person again and only goto someone you trust or on a recommendation of someone with longhair and and has good results.
Well a year is not a long time to wait and before you know it will have grow longer again. Growing out longhair you just have to be patient...eh trimmers!!!
Cheers,

Tryin' not to sound too harsh, MIKE, but like the old adage goes, "Once bitten, twice shy", so, although yor project'd hair cultivation has been set back another year or so, I'd have to concur w/t opinions of Caesar and John B. ahead of me ... namely, why'd ya go back if they butchered ya B4, MIKE?!
I had always made it ABUNDANTLY CLEAR to my stylists, Sharon and Deidre, that if they had ever overstepped my wishes for a minor trim, that they'd be held liable, a thinly-veil'd phrase for "I'd've sued 'em!" and I'd've been within my rights to do so, too.
I know I'm just a skip down the road fr. Manhattan and that there are a myriad salons there specificly for peops who have long hair and wish to KEEP their hair long, but MIKE, man, there've jus' GOTTA be similar stylists near you, stylists who respect their clients wishes and requests.
Yours for sustain'd hair growth, minimal trims,
Quenyan
Same exact thing happened to me! My boss at the real estate company has an allegedly high class hair dresser from NYC. When she got her hair done one day a year ago, she made an appointment for me and paid for it saying that my hair would grow better if trimmed. It was all a well intentioned little perk. But sure enough she cut off way too much in spite of my instructions. Set me back about 8 months. I've stopped posting progress pictures. At the time I told everyone I was very happy with the way it looked so as not to make anyone feel bad. Now my hard fixed rule is that no one ever comes near my hair with scissors. Fingers OK any time, but no scissors!
Mike, "Once bitten, twice shy". You have beautiful hair.
I would suggest that all you need is an occasional
shampoo/conditioner and brush or comb.
peace, jonalbear
I know it bugs you now but that feeling will fade and you just
have to move on and keep going after all it will grow back.
Like John B said you really have to just let it grow and leave it
alone.

This is my golden rule, I learned it from a woman with knee length hair.
She only allows one person to trim her hair and he also has long hair.
The best way to make hair manageable is to keep away from trims. Once your hair is long enough, you can really control it and you sometimes don't even need to control it much. I can even wake up and spend 15 seconds with my hand to fix it and go out. When I had short hair, my hair ALWAYS stood up and ALWAYS was unruly and I had to obsessively comb it. So, don't get your hair cut or trimmed until you want to get it to a preferred length. And don't believe those myths about long hair being harder to manage.
Alas, what has just happened to you has happened to countless others in the past. At least next time you will know to avoid this hairdresser.........but beware, she is not the only that will mess you all up. They just don't seem to get the message and will do their own thing despite being told what is wanted.
I would suggest that at this point you allow your hair to grow non-stop for at least 2 years. All will even itself up by itself automatically and will look great.
Best of luck to you.
I thought if I gave her clear instructions, she'd so it as I want. It's not as if it looks bad, it's just completely set me back a year in terms of growth, and she didn't do what I asked!! :(
I'm steering clear of all hair dressers for another year at the very least, and when I see one again, it is only for a trim. Luckily my hair grows ridiculously fast.
When my hair was to my waist, I did my own trims, but only when ends were too ragged or if I'd done damage in some stupid manner (lighting a cigarette on a breezy day).
Hello
Mike One question that sort of can to me when reading your post was
When the hairdresser finished cutting your hair did you Actually pay her for cutting it ????????
1/ If your paying someone to undertake the job of cutting your hair and they dont cut it as you have asked you can REFUSE to pay them I mean ask yourself if you ask me to do a job for you would you still pay me if i did the job incorrectly ?????
Axel
Yes, but only because she is a friend of my sister's.
I read your post, I won't say men or women are any more likely to mess up your hair or get it right, Here's my experience, don't ever go there again but it's not just her it's the whole haircutting "profession" 99% anyway, who ever is cutting your hair has a preconceived idea in thier mind of how it's going to look and like a machine they can only transfer that image to your head, not to mention they're all " know it alls" when you say trim, or style or even show a pic all they hear is blah, blah, blah, some even take pleasure in messing up your hair knowing there's nothing you can do about it, it gives them satisfaction some how if they're mean or having an off day, many of them hate thier job, they been trained a certain way and can't get untrained, My last hair cut wasn't so bad since i'm letting it grow out, but i had very specific insstructions for the stylist and he tried his hardest to not listen and do what he wanted, I had to keep talking the whole time telling him how i wanted it and didn't want it and watched the whole time i didn't ever get into that just "relax" and see how it looks "state" and finally while he was still trimming and doing waht ever, I knew he wanted to just keep doing it his way, by then my hair was as close to being how i wanted it as it would get and before he crossed the line into what i didn't want i said" ok i'm done, know more cutting,I'm ready to go, that's exactly how i want it now, any more will be too much" literally I doubt those were my exact words, but it was close, that's how hard it is to get it done. They tink thier suppose to guide you into a style u don't want ect. my suggestion would be let your hair grow for longer then u thought possible like say 12 weeks before your next trim, go to a real stylist, don't go to a $10 barber the high priced people are just as difficult to work with( the last guy was only $50, which is middle of the road) but in the long run it's better then just having some one butch you, and once you get used to going longer in between haircuts, you'll want to get your hair cut less and less, and the time time between haircuts goes by faster,
