Why should I grow out my hair? I mean I want to and I currently am growing it out. But are there really any benefits to it? Because when guys ask me (who are usually really rude and condescending) they say "why did you grow it out?" and along the lines of that. To be honest I don't know why, I just like how it looks. But that's not a good enough answer for them. So can you guys give me some reasons that I can use xD It sounds weird, but whenever I say "because I like it like that" they say something stupid like "oh you're trying to be a metalhead or a goth" ....I stand there in awe at their stupidity every time. Although I my favourite music genre is death metal. Anyways thanks to everyone.
Why do you owe anyone an explanation? The nicest thing you can respond to their rude and condescending attitude is silence.
Because I want too, if they pry more respond to them with silence.
Hey everyone I just want to say thanks for your replies and you guys are all right. I sort of feel stupid now, but you live and learn. Oh and before I forget in response to John.B I like early Kataklysm with Sylvain Houde on vocals, I like Cryptopsy with only Lord Worm (although I hate the direction they're going right now, not looking good) I like Cephalectomy from Canada also they're insane. I really like black metal but there are too many elitists in that genre, but still good musicians and music. Anyways thanks everyone! Merry Christmas to you and your families.
When people ask me, I tell them that I want to see what it's like to have long hair before I go bald, which is the truth.
In my experience, people will leave you alone once they realize you are serious.
As far as benefits go, I thought about it, and the best way I can sum it up for me is that...well, it's FUN!
As Lurk says just say nothing to them and eventually they will get board in asking questions. At the end of the day your doing it for yourself and no one else.
Great to see you enjoy death metal music, what are your favourite bands?
Cheers,
John.B
"So it will be long."
It's true, yet so painfully obvious that it dumbfounds one.
Also, on being asked this question, it's helpful to remember that certain questions, like this one, reinforce a truism of sorts that applies under infrequently occuring circumstances: "If you have to ask the question, you probably wouldn't understand the answer."
I usually start with the "I always wanted to, but never was committed until now. I want to see what it's like before I don't have any hair."
If they want more I tell them that I've learned alot about myself and my true friends during the growth of my hair. I've learned about how cool it is to be able to like the real me instead of the me that was colored, trimmed, gelled, moussed, boofed, and sprayed. It's also really cool not to have to go through all that every morning.
Actually, that's a *VERY* good reason. If it's not good enough for them, they have issues of their own that they need to work out. I wonder what "reasons" they have for not having longer hair? The only person who needs to think it is a good enough "reason" is the person himself.
I don't know what's wrong with saying you're growing it because you like it, if that's the reason. There's no need to come up with an "excuse" for your hair.
Friend,
Because I like it and because it feels right to me. When I was younger I always feared that I would be considered queer. I wanted long hair then but it would literally have been impossible in a gender rigid society for a young man to have long hair. I always felt a little depressed after a visit to the barber. Now, I fear someone will think I am "normal." I like my long hair and never intend to cut it except to clean up the ends.
Having spoken personally, I will speak as a psychologist. Your critics are experiencing "Cognitive Dissonance." Your hair shakes up their self assuredness. Further, it is also quite possible that some of them have deep envy.
Perhaps the best historical example is Paul of Tarsus, as reported in the book of "Acts," in the Christian "New Testament," who stoned early followers of the teachings of Jesus, because it threatened his religious beliefs. Then he had a dramatic experience, and became the most famous promoter of Jesus' teachings, though with his own spin.
But having used this example, I also feel constrained to say that I am not trying to change anyone's religious view. Rather in my opinion Jesus' teachings might better have remained "Judaissm for export," but when the Roman Government got involved and "Orthodoxy," was defined and imposed in the 4th. C., and books were destroyed, the Jesus movement nearly lost its relevance on the ground.
Former Secretary of State Madelyn Albright said in a speech at Yale: "What if Mr. Bush had gone on national television the day after 911 and said 'If a man strikes you on your right cheek, turn then your left cheek also." I believe the whole world would have been with us in our determination to stop terrorism.
So in this season of alleged "Peace on Earth and Good will toward all," my hair also has some religious signification as one who believes talking is better than fighting. "You may say that I'm a dreamer; but I'm not the only one."
