Hello Friends, I was in Paris recently and noticed a lot of men with quite long hair. It was especially gratifying to see older men with long hair. What was interesting was that many of these men had their long hair "styled" (I don't know what other word to use).
In other words, their long hair often appeared to be layered or perhaps some of it was thinned out to avoid a bushy look or to encourage the hair to hang a certain way.
I know that most of us don't ever want to cut out hair but I thought this approach was interesting for those men who feel they can't wear their hair long because of their professional job, etc. Of course this was Paris ("capital of fashion") and these men looked wonderful in their beautifully tailored clothes and "coiffed" long hair!
Any thoughts on this? Maybe this look is happening in other big cities?
For the ones with straight hair, layering is a very good idea, since it adds volume and "energy" to the otherwise flat-looking hair.
BUT, if you have frizzy-wavy hair,you should definitely avoid layers,as the least thing you would want is volume ^^;
(i have the experience :S )
But layers correctly done can really help curly hair. My wife has long curly hair and has layers.
Hi Carla, I agree. My hair is somewhat thin (the hair strands, not the coverage or amount) and as it gets longer the gravity pulls it down. In the past, when I had long hair, I would have it layered so that it became more full and - as you said so well - had more "energy". Now, as I go long again and spend more time on this great mlhh site, I'm so far abstaining from doing any cutting, shaping or styling. But - time will tell, of course. I agree with Ken that it is great to see nature take its course. I'm older now and the "character" of my hair has changed somewhat. Happy New Year, Johnnie
Well I've never been one to follow fashion and layering is something to be considered only if you have the right type of hair.
I don't follow what they do it Paris!
Cheers,

Hello John, I definately agree with your thoughts. The layering would only work with the right hair (which I'm not really sure which hair is appropriate for layering). Your hair is really fantastic "just the way it is". I think part of this is due to the type of hair you have; it just doesn't want to be "messed with". The other thing is your persona - clear, self confident, accessible. These things help enhance and validate the way one
"wears" their hair. Thanks for your thoughts, Johnnie
Well, to my eyes (and ears - lol), it's just great to hear that there are *plenty* of longhairs around, --- whether their hair is professionally "styled", or... NOT!!
As far as my own self goes... I just had a professional trim in Oct. I only had one inch taken off; but, hey, that's about all I can handle at a time (lol)!! The last professional trim I had before that one was way back in the spring of '04 (again, only one inch off, --- mostly to remove split ends; but a tiny bit of re-shaping also). The '04 trim cost me $65 in US dollars (NOT including tip); but, that high price is because I don't trust just anybody with my hard-earned hair. This recent trim in Oct. of this year was FREE to me; but, that's because the professional "stylist" happens to be my partner (who is a professional DOG GROOMER - lol)!!
My guess is that it will probably take me another 3 years before I'll want another professional trim again, though... Professional hair styling can and does sometimes look very, very nice; but, most of the time I'm pretty happy with Mamma Nature's professional interpretation of what hair should look like... the looooooooooooooonger the BETTER!!!

Ken, those are great and wise thoughts from you. Since you work with plants, you might appreciate what I thought when I saw French men with "styled" hair...I liked all of it but I also thought about how the French like to "style" many of their trees and shrubs into topiary forms - various cubes, spirals, fantastic designs. Those French! They just can't leave something alone - they want to "style" it!
Anyway - with your beautiful blonde hair, the less style intrusion the better. You are very right to let nature decide how the hair hangs and falls naturally. Best, Johnnie
Hi Johnnie,
I live in Adelaide, capital city of South Australia, and there are certainly longhairs around here. I am definately not the only guy with shoulder length hair here... and I think this may inspire other guys to one day grow out their hair too!
... hrmm a male with 'styled' longhair.. I have not seen this too much.. however I am most excited. Do you think you could send me a few pictures to give me an example of styled longhair??
This would definately make me a standout from the other longhairs lol!!
Peace

Hello Ryan, Go to paulmathieu.net Open the site and then click on the photo of paul mathieu - it will be one that is moving across the page with lots of other photos. YOu will then see several pictures of his hair. You can also explore the site and get still, enlarged photos. HERE IS A QUESTION: I have thought that this man's hair was subltly "styled" but perhaps it is not? It appears to at least have some conditioner or something on it to keep it back and in place. Any comments from anyone? Cheers, Johnnie
The French attitude toward hair in Paris anyway seems better and
it can be fashionable but you really don't see it much anywhere
else with a few exceptions.
