My hair is around 3 feet long and I'd like to take off 6 inches or so. If any of you guys have given yourself trims, can I get some advice on the best way to do it? I did look at EdG's website but would like more details. Thanks.
Quite awhile ago, someone posted a link to a woman's website who gave detailed instructions on how to do this. She had waist-length hair, and showed how to do a straight-across blunt cut, and also how to cut it resulting in more of a V-shape in back. Unfortunately, I don't remember any more than this!
Occasionally I have trimmed my own hair; but, I will only cut off about a half-inch at a time, never any more than that (in case I might make a mistake somehow). I prefer a natural "V-shape" in back, so how I have trimmed it is to simply bring all my hair over to one side (left or right), and also in front, then cut; then bring all my hair over to the other side, but again in front, then cut off the same amount from that side as well.
Clear as mud? (LOL)
Best of luck to you!!

I would certainly advocate (the is the correct Mr English corrector...lol) the advice from Ed.G and Urban Cowboy and just trim a small amount at a time.
It sounds like you have great hair there and perhaps you could share a picture with us. To me 6" sounds like rather a major trim and I know some people do that for maintenance etc and you don't always have to do such large trims.
I hope the advice helps and hope to hear back how it went.
Cheers,

The article Ken is referring to is Feye's self-trimming method. I used to trim my hair using pretty much the same technique.
Your hair is long enough that you can easily trim it yourself. I suggest going slowly - take off only an inch at a time.

So I can access it later?
Great idea! I've added the link.
Thanks for adding the link! It will probably save some future longhair from a maniacal barber (;-)

I trimmed off one and a half inches of my own hair a few days back. I did this after I got out of the shower as wet hair is easier to cut then dry. I find it is easier as wet hair will stick together. What I did, was part my hair down the middle, then down the back of my head. I pulled each side of the parted hair over my shoulders and let it hang down my chest. that way the longest parts would be getting the needed trim.
I did have to have my Mom even up the back, as one half was a little higher then the other half.
I am happy with the results too.
