I drove South down the Pacific Coast Highway yesterday to a nice State Beach about 45 minutes away from San Francisco, called San Gregorio, --- BEAUTIFUL!! It's been one of my favorites for many years... The wind had a very cold bite to it, though. I wore my new black hoodie sweatshirt I got from Even for Christmas, as well as layered well underneath...
This first pic is just me from behind, looking West...

Even and I hiked along the edge of the cliff overlooking the ocean, which gradually got higher and higher above sea-level. He was kind enough to put up w/ me begging him to snap pics of this old geezer (as well as I snapped a few of him, too - ha!), --- in this case, here I am imitating Moses about to part the waters of the Pacific...
I failed, unfortunately. i was really looking forward to hiking over dry land all the way to Japan; but, I guess I will not go down in history for accomplishing that, after all....

A cold day at the beach, long hair, and flannel shirts all go great together...
Hope everyone has a Happy Hairy New Year!
- Ken
All great pictures but this introspective one is my favorite! All the best to you and Even in 2008 :)
Great Paul Bunyan effect; you look like you're towering over the sand and waves. We might have crossed paths, but the North Bay was the target yesterday, and the South several days ago.
If you really need to get to Japan and the Moses thing isn't working and you can't part the water, you could always try the Jonah method.
Anyway, those are some really good pictures. I don't travel to CA anymore, but, I do go to FL a lot and I love to go to the beach in the Winter. It's seems so cold and lonley, yet, beautiful and unmolested.

LOL, that's awesome! The reason it didn't work is because you didn't have an Egyptian mob right behind you! :)
a staff is required as well!
Here's what this beautiful State Park looks like facing away from the Pacific, --- I'm sorry I'm blocking part of the otherwise nice view; but, hey, after all this IS a hair site (lol)!!
The hills in the background are part of the Santa Cruz Mt. range that skirts along the coast in roughly a North - South direction.

My favorite hair stylist, Mr. Wind, comes up w/ doos I never would have greamed of! Here's one for your amusement...
- Ken
Oops! I meant to type: "dreamed", not "greamed!"
Don't know if this next pic will be accepted, because it's vertically framed: we'll see....
Hi again Ken,
These are wonderful photos, and your hair looks great, and is thick and healthy. What a beautiful location with a breathtaking view, and hopefully, I will see it on my road trip in 2009.
Take care,
David
Your hair looks gorgeous, Ken. I see it tends to curl a lot in wind, making it appear to have shrunk in length by a good foot. Anyway, keep growing it.
Scott
hey Ken,nice pic's looks nice and warm
compaired to what central Wisconsin has.
I really like these pictures you've posted. I know I'm supposed to associate California beaches with surfing and Frankie and Annette and Gidget and such, but these landscapes remind me of Hitchcock movies. I think where movie Birds was filmed was up in Mendocino County to the north rather than to the south of SF however.
Great hair, of course, and Happy 2008 to you and all!
Matt, Yes, the film Vertigo was filmed in San Francisco and surrounding coastal areas.
peace, jonalbear
Most of the "Birds" movie was filmed in the coastal town of Bodega Bay; however the schoolhouse was at Bodega, several miles inland. The scenes were stitched together in a way that would lead one to think the schoolhouse was just a few blocks uphill from downtown Bodega Bay, but that is not the case.
We used to have friends who lived in the schoolhouse back in the 1980s.
Bill
Cool story about that schoolhouse in the movie The Birds, Bill. Have you ever driven on the road to Dillon Beach? It's a small coastal town a few miles away from Hwy. 1, --- just off the beaten path enough, so not that many people ever go there or know about it. On those foggy summer days, the Pacific Coast Hwy. at that location is far enough inland to be out of the fog; but, take the drive to Dillon Beach, and it is EXACTLY like it looked in scenes from The Birds. Jagged, eerie-looking rock formations, twisted Cypress trees, lonely expanses of road with dark, looming fog clouds rolling over the hills... You can just picture the tumbleweed from that spooky night-time scene. Don't visit Dillon Beach on a sunny coastal day, though, --- it doesn't feel Hitchcock enough!
Another famous Hitchcock film location was at the old Mission at San Juan Beautista, where Kim Novak jumped off the roof in Vertico. And then of course in SF there's Ft. Point, the Palace at the Legion of Honor, and other great sights.
- Ken
Yes, I've been to all of those places. Dillon Beach is indeed an isolated "end of the earth" kind of place.
You can't get behind the fort at Fort Point right now, though. It's a bit too close for comfort to the bridge for security-types while we are at war, so they have fenced it off.
Bill
Ken, Beautiful hair and scenery. All the pics are great.
The elusive Even behind the camera? Happy New Year to you both.
peace, jonalbear
I'm jealous!
I've been dreaming for a while about taking the bike up the whole thing along the coast.
I can't believe it's essentially in your backyard!
Beautiful photos Ken ! And your hair is looking the best ever.
Lots of Happiness to you and your in 2008
Walter
Great pics Ken as always! I love that Californian scenery, a heck of a lot more funnier than the constant darkness and snow we have during the winters, lol:)
And your hair's amazing as well, keep up the good work and a happy new year to you!
Simon
Great photos Ken - Happy New Years to you and yours!
Karsten
Hey Ken
Great photos and do they ever bring back some happy memories for me of past trips near your area. And, it is just so beautiful I agree.
Any chance this beach was in the Pescadaro down to Davenport area?
Thanks for sharing these photos and my best to you for a happy and healthy New Year.
Take care
Justin~
Hey Justin,
Yes indeed, San Gregorio Beach (where the ocean photos were all taken) is only 10 minutes drive North of the town of Pescadero, --- where Even and I went to dinner, at a well-known hang-out named Duate's Tavern, famous for their Cream of Artichoke soup! The restaurant is EXCELLENT, --- great seafood, and also famous for their homemade Ollalieberry pie (a local coastal berry which is very similar to a blackberry). Duarte's (apparently locals pronounce it, "DU'arts") has been around for many, many years. When I moved to CA in '77, it was only a short time after exploring my new surroundings that I first heard about this town and its faous restaurant, a destination extremely worthy of its hour-plus long drive from SF.
I didn't make it as far South as Davenport, though (which as I recall is about 10 or 15 minutes further South, much closer to Santa Cruz). Ano Nuevo State Reserve, where you can view the Elephant Seals this time of year, I think is mid-way between Pescadero & Davenport...
i NEVER tire of seeing the beauty of that coastline (or ANY No. California or Pacific NW coastline, for that matter), --- a long, thin slice of refreshingly cool Heaven right here on planet Earth!!
- Ken
Sometime when the MLHH locals get together, we will have to do Duarte's! It's always delightful on a bright sunny day to get out of the city and drive down the coast to there. We city folk need more exposure to wide open spaces!
Bill
Yet ANOTHER GREAT set of photos from none other than the urban cowboy! AWESOME photos Ken. That beach looks beautiful DESPITE the COLD weather. I hope you have a NICE time with Even today on New years eve. Take care KEN
