I've been trying to grow out my hair since august/september 07' and so far i can pony the back but the front is cut shorter. I was first wondering how long it will take before i can pony the rest of it?
I have also been taking a bunch of discrimination for wanting to let my hair grow out. My dad is 53 and he has a mullet that's about an inch in the front and down to his butt in the back, yet he has been yelling at me to get a haircut. Not to mension my work was yelling at me to cut mine to "get it out of my eyes", but it parts in the middle so you can see both my eyes just fine.
I did trim it up in september in the front to get it out of my eyes but now the only way I can keep my job is to use hairspray(alot of hairspray) before each shift to keep it slicked back.
It seems everyone is against me wanting to grow out my hair. My own parents went on yelling at me for a week to keep my hairback all through christmas and new years(everyday) just so my grandfather wouldn't join in the yelling.
Any Idea's how long this discrimination will last? And any idea how long it will take to pony all of my hair? (its alittle past my nose in the front, past my jaw on the sides infront of the ears, and touches my shoulder area in the back)
Hey man, sorry to hear about your problems,as every man growing long hair has to face them, but dont give up as i did, keep it growing and ignore whatever other people say, because what really matters is thet youre happy with what you got. Also, you can try a few things I tried when my hair was about shoulders length, and bangs also end of nose length, you can wear your bangs behind your ears, wear a hat, make a ponytail(as you already do),gel(as you said),or greese it back with gel.I had my hair the same length as yours, what I di was I did a half ponytail,so i would get rid of all my tangles(also thought it look cool XD),and wear my bangs behing my ears, you can try that if u like.
See you on the board, keep it growing, and good luck with your work and family. :)
PS.:Theres a picture of a useful ponytail.
I know how that is, my Mom and Sister gave me a lot of crap about my hair when growing it out. Recently my sister gave me crap about it being long.
Luckily, I have never had to take crap at work about my hair being long. I do get teased occasionally, but that is all in fun. What industry do you work in?
Instead of parting your hair, comb it strait back over top of your head. It will look neater and you will have that tailed look. Plus know one will be able to tell how long it is as it grows out.
Hope this helps
Talk about "the pot calling the kettle black" I wonder why your father is giving you grief if is hair is long at the back. As ESDI says you can brush it back or use gel to keep it out of your eyes. Hair growth varies but I'm sure you will be able to tie in back between 6-9 months from month.
It's just something that families do and I would turn the question around and ask they why hair covering your face has such issues.
I hope that helps and you can cool stuff with you parents.
Cheers,
John.
As long as YOU let it...
I think the main reason everyone is yellig at you is because of the problem
the front part of your hair is causing.
I'll bet that if ALL of your hair was tied back in a tail they would leave you alone.
Many people do not realize this but it's the FRONT of your hair that really makes you look like you have long hair.
If you look at two men and one has shoulder-length hair that is the same length in the FRONT and in back it will look longer than someone with a mullet with hair that reaches his belt.
Many guys do not understand this but it's true: it'
s the FRONT that makes you look like a long haired man.
Try using to well-hidden bobby pins along with the hair spray.
Later, when your hair is longer, try making a half-tail higher up along with a regular tail at the base of your neck.
Good luck.
Well I really can't tell you how much longer, I would guess
a year if the front is shorter. As for your old man that's
a laugh I mean does he have a clue how people view mullets?
I knwo it's not funny from where your standing but don't take
any shit and as much as you can give it back to him. Like
John B said if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black.
You may not stop him from giving you grief so the best you can do is figure out a way to deal with it, you know blow it off.

People (family + friends, random bystanders still do) stopped telling me to get a haircut when i just gave up caring what they thought
I suppose they realised that no matter what they said i was still going too grow my hair
So hang in there buddy :)

What is your job? If you deal with the public, it IS desirable for the customer to see your face. And if you work with food or machinery, there are legitimate concerns about hair getting in the way.
As a woman, I can wear hairbands and barrettes to keep my hair out of my face. Maybe if you find some in a color that blends with your hair color, you can keep your hair out of your face for the time-being. Or the idea of bobbypins might work too, but I find that for my hair, they don't stay in as well.
