Hey everyone, it is an excellent day here on the East Coast (in the US), and I hope everyone is doing well. I have an update, but as I posted a few days ago, I lost a bit of progress due to a slight "incident". I was close to 17 months before, but now I guess I'm closer to 13 or 14 months, I can't really tell.
Prior to said incident:
As of January, 2008:
and, as the wise sages of hair advice have said prior to me, tis best never to take oneself too serious...
Also, I have a question for all you beard growers/maintainers on the board: does side burn hair generally have a shorter length than chin hair? It seems like the hair on the side of my face never grows too long even though I hardly ever shave it off, but I'm trying to grow out some chin fur right now. Any advice would be appreciated.
Peace,
Ryan
Hey,
Excellent hair there, I like the curliness, and it works well with the hat too.
I'd like to second your question, since I've been careful not to shave off real hair just above my sideburns for a year now, and yet it never seems to grow past about two or so inches, and so whenever I have a ponytail it just sticks out of the sides. If I cut it off though, it looks wrong - as though hair isn't growing properly there.
Regards :)
It's normal. There seems to be a transition between the two different types of hair. Sometimes I cut it with hairdressing scissors, but when I do I cut it at an angle to make it look more natural. I try to line it up with my beard more than my hair, but only below the top of the ear, and I don't cut anything above that.
Sideburns: depends on how low you go with them. The hair right in front of the little notch in your ear (I don't know the proper name for this) is where the transition seems to be. The hair lower is beard-like, the hair above is scalp-like. The scalp-hairs for me do not get that long. This is a tricky area. I find these hairs curl up and look crazy, so I trim them along with the beard to the same length. The beard-like, lower hairs get as long as does the remainder of the beard, for me.
I'm not sure this a good answer!
Anywho, your hair still looks great and will be back soon to its former length. Sorry to hear of the incident with the stove.
This is something we all need to be wary of -- open flames and hot things. Hair is singed very easily and is basically ruined by extreme heat.
Candles, stoves, fireplaces, etc. -- all things to take caution around. Even when I bake something in the oven, I open the door standing to the side so as not to get hit with the bug "whoosh" of heat that comes out when I open the door to put something in or take something out. Also, I'm careful not to lean over the stove or toaster when they're on. I got my hair caught in a toaster once. Luckily, it wasn't on; I was just cleaning it. If it had been on, that'd have been on hell of a mess. Even brake rotors can singe hairs. I once singed the end of my beard on a brake rotor. I guess I need to explain that. I was changing a tire on my friend's race car. Race car brakes get very hot, especially in short track racing as it is start and stop. Sometimes at a night race, you can see the rotors glowing red hot as a car goes into a turn.
The point, take caution around hot things.
Excellent advice Matt! Thanks for the info. on the fur as well.
Hi Ryan,
You got some good tips there from Elektros and Matt.B there and similar along the lines I was thinking. When trimming my sideburns I don't trim further than the top of my ear as I hate those sticky out bits.
The update pictures look great and you have a fine head of hair there and a wonderful natural curl. The pictures always showing you interesting facial expressions.
Keep it growing mate.
Cheers,
John.B
Hi Ryan,
Sorry to hear about your little "incident" that caused you to lose some length, but thankfully, you are OK, and your hair will grow back. Your hair looks great, and is thick and curly.
As for beard hairs, the hairs around the sideburns definitely grow slower, and are thinner, than the main facial hairs. I know my sideburn area is both thinner and shorter than the main beard, which is maintained at two months growth with a trimmer.
Keep it growing,
David
Ryan, Cool update. Great curls. Looks like you are well on your way to to longhairedome in spite off "lost time".
peace, jonalbear
Hi Ryan
Your hair appears to be in excellent condition in spite of the incident you experienced. The curls are looking very healthy. Keep it growing for sure.
Good update Ryan! too bad you lost some length but you'll have it back in no time.
When you're young some of the facial hair may be pretty slow growing, even up to when you're 25-30 years of age. Then all of a sudden hair will start sprouting everywhere and you'll be shaving where you didn't think hair would grow! So be patient, those burns will fill in.
Bruce
Thanks a bunch for the comments and the input! I really appreciate it! See ya around...
Peace,
Ryan
