Does anyone else who uses shampoo bars get this? My hair feels all coated, is incredibly tangly and generally feels nasty. It doesn't need clarifying because I did that not long ago, so what else could it be?
I tried a shampoo bar for a bit (a friend had an extra an insisted I give it a shot). My hair felt nice for maybe a day before it felt quite gross and in need of cleaning (I usually only shampoo a couple times/week). I used the bar again and was really displeased with the waxy feel of my hair. I took another shower, used a good dose of clarifying shampoo, conditioned the heck out of it, and kindly returned the bar to my friend.

I would be inclined to get rid of the shampoo bars entirely. Give the hair a Clarifying Shampoo the first time followed by conditioner. After that use the Shampoo (liquid) that you had been using before or try another brand. Good luck and I hope this will do the trick.
What shampoo bar are you using? Is it a saponified oil soap? If it is, that's okay. Saponified oils are oils that have been mixed with lye. The mixure changes the chemical make up of the lye so that it's not bad for your hair/skin. However, saponified oil soaps do leave a residue (soap scum on your tub).
You can get rid of this with a vinegar/water rinse.
Here's a recipe:
Sarah's Honey & Vinegar Hair Shine Rinse
1-2 tablespoons Organic apple cider vinegar (you may have to experiment with the best dilution for your hair)
1 teaspoon honey (I like the raw kind)
1 cup warm water (I use filtered)
After shampooing pour the mixture through your hair and do not rinse out. If you have long hair you can double the recipe. This recipe gives my hair shine and works as a conditioner/detangler as well.
I use a shampoo bar. But, it's not a saponified oil soap. I use Lush "New" solid. Here's a link:

Mouse, Justin, that's unfortunate to hear, but I will stick with them. I am moving into college tomorrow, and when I used to live in the town where college is the water didn't affect my hair - here the water is very very hard and that has made it behave strange.
DavidH, I've heard good things about ACV on the LHC, and if it's still all tacky I will try using it.
I've never even heard of shampoo bars but it sounds like you have to clarify again. When to clarify isn't necessarily dependent on how long ago you did it, but rather on how much buildup you have. That can depend on the time of year (climate) and what else you have been doing. If your hair seems dull, laden, and tangles you have too much junk in it and you should get it out. A good cheap clarifier is Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo (except you don't need to use it daily) which is around $1 (U.S.) for a bottle and leaves no residue.
Shampoo does that. You need CONDITIONER snd LOTS of it!
Try ViVE PRO SMOOTH-INTENSE for THICK HAIR.
Good luck
Just washed again, still really hard to comb through, but I don't want to use conditioner again because even the runniest stuff makes my hair really flat >_<
