I'm curious about the age of people posting to this board, and how long they've been growing out their hair. I'm 38, and I've been growing mine for almost two years now. How about you?
Scott (of the long hair)
P.S. Those are Utilikilts that I'm wearing. Best purchases I've ever made!
http://www.utilikilts.com
I'm 41, grew mine for the first time starting at 38.
I also wear earrings - both ears.
I too wear Utilikilts, I have 4 of 'em!

I'm 15, and I've been growing it for about... 4-5 months now. Can't wait for it to be nice and long... ^_^
I'm 44, and I've had long hair (shoulder length or longer) since 1970 (when I was a teenager)!!!! Can anybody on this board beat 31 years STRAIGHT (still going, and it will ALWAYS stay long until I die) with having and keeping it long?
Longhairedman
P. S. I never wore and don't care to wear a Utilikilt.
That's OK; to each his own. I hadn't intended to pitch for Utilikilts, that was merely the most recent picture I had.
On topic, I've had my hair long for 5 years if you include the first time, but I don't intend to ever cut it short again. Wow, 31 years IS a long time.
Scott (of the long hair)

57 1/2, growing 15 months. Sorta interesting, we talk about how long we've been going long in the same fashion we give childrens' ages: in months for the first two years or so, then in years ....
38. last 'meaningful' cut in early '96.
I will be 42 next week, and I began growing my hair out October of 2000 with a final trim on Dec. 10. So, just over a year of growth, but almost a year since the last blade touched it. I have been able to wear a tail since mid summer.

Just turned 34, last haircut in '88 when I was in college so that's about 14 years. My hair is slightly past my butt and I get it trimmed about every 3 months.
Do you have any pics to share with us?
Check out my site. I'll be adding some more pics soon as it's kinds of sparce right now.
I am 50 + years young, my mind set is that of a 30 year young person.
In my 20's I had hair past by shoulder blades, 1/2 way down my back.
I am regrowing my hair again. My last haircut was mid - July 2001. I have 3 & 1/2 months of hair growth, and my hair is an average of 5" in length, I exercise well, eat a balanced diet, and take hair vitamins.
I am never going to get a hair cut again, as I now have changed jobs to that where I am allowed to have long hair.

Growing hair out from a shaved head for almost three months.
I'm 52 years old. I've been growing my hair for several years, and it seems to be at terminal length.

Scott and all,
Hey there!
I'm 39 and have been growing my hair out Long since March of '98 so that is almost four years now - and this is from being a shaved headed man too!
I also recently purchased a Utilikilt of my own and I really like it!
This photo here is of me at the Folsom Street Festival up in San Francisco in September of this year. I had just purchased that Uk from their booth at the Festival. Good thing too as it was really hot that day!
Madoc
29 but days away from 30 (yikes!)
I'm 45, will be 2 years without a haircut Dec. 13--Finally!!
My hair is just past my shoulders
Hi, I'm Jin. 26 Y.O. and 10 days to 2 years from my previous "real" haircut.
I am 42. My last haircut at a barber was in June 1971. The last time it was cut shorter than shoulder length was February 28, 1981.
Rob
I am 35. Last hair cut was 6 months ago.
I'm 51; been growing for about 5 years. Hair is about 4 inches past shoulders when pulled straight(it's kind of wavy!).

I'm 55. I've had "longish" hair since the mid 1970s and last visited a barber in 1979, thereafter trimming it myself. They always cut too much off! I quit trimming it altogether in 1996. Hair is now mid-back.
I am 41 and have been growing my hair since I was 32. It is nearing waist length now, since I last cut it to just below my shoulders a little over two years ago.
26, been growing out from a mullet since February. Hmmm, that's cool...
I'm 20. Last haircut was in August 2000 (almost 16 months ago).
I'm 32 years old.
Scott, I got a really big laugh from your fancy decorated-fonts description of yourself on your home page! What a wonderfully creative & informative way to introduce yourself. I think I'll be chuckling all day from that.
Chris
Hey men...I am 40...been growing my hair now for 3 years and 4 months..it is about mid back and a few inches past my nipples in front...want to have my hair at least to waist length before a trim. have thick wavy hair...healthy with never a split end...i have been very fortunate.
I'm 14 (will be 15 in 2 months) and I have been growing my hair out now for about a year and 2 or 4 months. But got frequent trims in the beginning so It's not as long as it should be now.
I'm 58. My last haircut was on March 6, 1996.
I started from a #2 buzz cut. My black hair is now
between mid-back and my waist. I don't plan on
ever cutting it or trimming it.
I'm 24 and have been growing mine out for the past 8 months.
I've noticed that there are a lot of guys who are over 40 and 50 years of age.I think it's wonderful that all these guys do what they want an feel like and don't conform like the rest of the flock. I just hope i can reach that age and still have my full head of wavy hair, it can be completely white too, i like white.
I am 16, huge huge minority among people my age. Everyone's got the shaved sides w/spikes on top thing going on
I'm 69, growing nearly 3 years, one trim, tail about 6".
I am at an age where I ought to know better than to look unconservative with long hair, but continuously
ignore the people that tell me so.(IN other words, I am 12)
I am at an age where I ought to know better than to look unconservative with long hair, but continuously
ignore the people that tell me so.(In other words, I am 12) I have been growing my hair out for 3 years, but I cut my hair because I had made really BAD choices on my previous hairstyle(mullet-like), so I am trying to even everything out again, and I am doing a much better job of it than before.
I will be 48 years old on Monday (12/3).
Had a short conservative haircut two years ago and then decided to let it grow. Got 3 inches cut off this June and realized that was a BIG mistake. Current hair length is 9 inches, growing and I love it!
I am 45 and have not had a haircut since 1996. My hair is past shoulder blades and when pushed forward is past upper chest.
I'm 16 (17 in about a week), have been growing my hair for about 4 months and am thinking about purchasing a utilikilt. I'm one of three guys in my entire school growing hair out. (so 15, 16, and 19 [I think]) Luckily, we're all outcasts/oddballs so people don't give us a much crap as they would anybody else.
I am 44, growing for two years.
This has been a great poll. If you haven't responded yet, please do.
I don't know if anyone has been keeping track, but up to this point, the average longhair is:
35 years old (youngest 12, oldest 69)
growing for about 4.5 years (longest 31 years, shortest, 4 months)
KEEP ON GROWIN!
Well, I've been keeping a spreadsheet of the results, but you beat me to the puch. Here are the results so far, INCLUDING yours:
Avg. Age: 34.8 yrs.
Avg Time grown: 3.9 yrs.
Avg. age started growing: 30.9 yrs.
Youngest: 12
Oldest: 69
Shortest amount of time: 1.5 months
Longest amount of time: 31 years
Keep on answering; I'll keep on tabulating. It may take me a bit longer to respond; I was on AT&T @home, which pulled the plug this morning on all their users. I really appreciate the response the the poll.
Scott (of the long hair)
just curious-what would the average time grown be without that spectacularly high 31 years?
Believe it or not, that just lowers the average to 3.5 years. Now, if we exclude that and the 20 year one, The average becomes 3.1 years, a difference of a whole year.
Scott (of the long hair)
Has anyone compiled the names and the stats? It may be a cool thing for the webmaster to have as well? Just a thought, and we would all know who we were talking to as well? :-)

Perhaps we should do some data spread analysis (standard deviation), to see how "well-spreaded" or "concentrated" it is.
A graphical plot or pie chart could also be helpful.
I just turned 35 last month and have been growing my hair (this time around) for about 17 months though I've been a "longhair" at heart since elementary school.
For the record, I don't think I've seen such a long thread before in my 2 years visiting this board (62, or rather 63 responses including mine).
I do think it's a great idea of polling this question as, at the same time, we did some sort of "roll call" to the members on this board.
Boy, I didn't think we had so many "lurkers" around :)
I'm 34 years old. Last haircut was 9 years ago.
Sergey.
Hey. I'm 16 and I've been growing my hair since April of 2001. It's in good length now... Although I am expecting more.
Love,
Kiat
I'm 19 and i've been growing my hair for about 5 months. I haven't cut it during then. I wouldn't call it long though.
I'm 31. I have been growing my hair out properly from age 22, with occasional trims and cuts in between. I last trimmed my hair from midback length (near waist) to just below shoulder length last June. It's currently below shoulderblade length
I am 52. Had shaved head for 10 years when most
everyone young and old except skinheads had longer
hair. Growing my hair for a year and a month,
everyone, young and old seems to have very short
hair and mine is the only long hair at work.
The women all like it and tease me about getting
a haircut but they really don't want me to cut
it. Although the men and women, you aren't going
to put it in a ponytail, you are? Auh, no, I say,
but I don't know why they don't like ponytails.
