Hey all!
I'm new here (and pretty new to growing my hair), been lurking for a few weeks and finally decided to post.
So yeah my story,I'm 17 years old, and for the first 15 years of my life I had my hair cut really short (with a razor) then in August 05, I decided I wouldn't get my hair cut with a razor any more, but I had no interest in growing my hair long. It was basically over the last 18 months that things started to change and I became interested in how I looked, what I wore and how my hair was etc. So I decided I wanted to grow my hair longer and lose weight, I managed to do the latter but came into problems with the first, as when I started to grow my hair longer, my hair became a curly mess and I got a lot of people telling me to cut it. So I cut it shorter again 9 months ago and kept that length for the next 6 months. Anyway things eventually changed when I was away with my family and it had been close to 6 weeks since my last haircut, so my hair was basically all over the place and badly needed a cut, anyway I had to go out to dinner and I had to look decent, so I decided to get a lend of my aunt's straightener. And after using it I couldn't believe how good it made my hair look (it was a really expensive straightener lol), after that I decided that instead of getting my hair cut again, I would straighten it and grow it. So since then I've been growing and straightening my hair, and yes I am aware that it is not good for my hair but it's either straighten it or cut it and I have to say I really do prefer my hair longer.
So anyway, I don't plan on growing my hair out incredibly long but I'd like to grow it somewhere between chin and shoulder length, maybe longer I guess I'll see as it grows.
So anyway I've added a couple of pictures (taken a few weeks ago) so be kind...
Welcome to the board!
First of all your hair looks great! I have to say I've no experience of using straighteners (my hair is pretty striaght) - from previous posts the general consensus on this subject tends to be towards advising very moderate use of such implements because of the damage they can cause when frequently used. Hopefully someone with more practical experience can advise you on this...
My suggestion would be to take a look at the users directory as you may be supprised that there are some other guys here with curly yet very long hair. Anyway I'm sure some of the guys here can releate to your dilema and should be able to issue some good advice!

Welcome, John. Your hair looks great. You may find, after it gets long (shoulder length and beyond) that letting it go to its natural curls actually looks great. I have a colleague with whom I work--curly dark hair. When he grew it out, the awkward stage was rather outrageous. It seemed to grow OUT forever. But, now that it's shoulder blade length, his hair looks fantastic BECAUSE of the curls.

Hey, thanks for the welcome and yeah you're right curly hair can look great when it's long but in the awkward stage it looks awful, that's why I've taken to straightening it because I really wouldn't of been able to put up with my hair otherwise but once it gets longer if it looks good natural maybe I'll keep it that way, or I could at least have 2 styles to choose from lol.
If you used some stuff in it, it might help the curl to look better. ^^ But I'm biased. xD Obviously.
Your straightened hair looks good too. Good luck growing it out!
Your curly hair actually looks really good and it really suits you
Well I say go and straighten it and just be careful. If that's
the way you like it that's what is important and I used a blow
dryer for many years early on cause it made my hair look thicker
but I and my hair survived. I don't use one anymore and after your
hair gets a certain length the wavyness of it may not bother you
as much.
