Hello guys,
I've been visiting this board for a while now after first discovering it several years ago. I've become interested in growing my hair out after several of my friends and my partner urged me to give it a try and it's been now almost a year since my last haircut, no trimming at all. I am definitely in it for the long haul. My hair type is thick, curly, and relatively coarse and compared to some of the guys here who have been growing out their hair for the same length of time, my hair looks quite shorter than theirs but I suppose that's normal given the curly nature of my hair; everything takes twice as long for my hair to grow compared to the straighter types.
During my long hair journey, I have read up dozens of articles and webpages about hair care and issues but thought I'd get gentlemen's opinions and tips here. I would love to hear from other curly tops on how they manage their hair too. I wash my hair regularly, almost daily because my scalp gets oily and it feels icky after more than a day of no shampooing, my curls always turn out real nice after a good shampooing. For conditioning I use a wash-out conditioner and use a dab of pure jojoba oil after drying my hair, using my fingers or a wide-tooth comb to brush it back and I'm good to go. Of course wind and humidity do unpredictable things to my hair but ah well, that's life and I fix it as much as I can during the day.
One thing I've definitely noticed is the increase in the amount of hair falling out after each shower, I know that's to be expected with growing hair long but I keep feeling nervous and wondering if perhaps I'm losing too much hair (I'm only 25). I also noticed that hair on the top of my head is thinner and more fragile than my sides. Is that typical of men hair?
I'll have to snap some pics of myself and post it soon.
Alexander, Welcome aboard. Yes, pictures please!
peace, jonalbear
You're lucky to have oily scalp with curls actually. XD
Anyway, hello. It'd be easier to put your mind at ease if we knew what your hair looked like; so we can tel if it's a reason for worry or if it's just paranoia. XD
Welcome Alexander! Sometimes it isn't more hair in the drain, but longer more noticable hair in the drain. Relax.

Hey, glad to have you on board. I possess a head of hair with all the descriptive terms you used (coarse, curly, big, etc...) I've been in the growing out process for about a year and three quarters now (my avatar is a bit outdated).
As for general maintenance/care of my curls, they definitely retain their fullest shape a few hours after shampooing/conditioning, but my hair overall tends to cooperate more the day after shampooing. I can definitely go for even four days after shampooing without washing my hair and have little to no itchiness, but it takes your scalp a while to adjust and cut down on the sebum production if you cut the frequency of washings. I personally never really bother with oil (olive, jojoba, etc.) but it certainly offers more good than harm when utilized correctly.
I wouldn't be worried about losing too many hairs unless you get a really significant amount of strands coming loose when you run your fingers through your hair. Its normal to lose 100 strands a day via shedding. To avoid clogging the shower drain, I usually detangle my hair with my fingers for about ten minutes and just clean up the strands and toss them in the trash.
Hope to see you around!
Peace,
Ryan
Welcome to the board Alexander and will look for those pics and then I can better comment on your hair issue.
Until then take care.
