Hello again,
last time I posted I think many people got the wrong idea of what I said.
I don't curse silicons!
So I wanted to list PROS and CONS of silicons :)
PRO:
- lays a film over your hair, giving it more resistance, volume and strength
- improves combing, less tangles and knots
- gives the hair more shine
CON:
- the wrong silicons can cause a silicon build up
- the wrong silicons HIDE hair damage making it almost invisible, but it's there and the damage goes on and gets worse (split ends for example)
- for some hair types DECREASES volume
There are silicons you can wash out COMPLETLY just by using water.
These are the "good silicons". And there are the band ones you CAN'T wash out. They stick to your hair and cause the silicon build up which of course isn't good for the hair and the scalp that gets "blocked" after a while due to the high amount of silicon on it.
The really good silicons are (for example):
Trideceth-12, Dimethicone Copolyo, Dimethicone copolyol/HWP, Hydroxypropyl, Polysiloxane, Lauryl methicone copolyol
The neither good nor bad ones:
Amodimethicone, Behenoxy Dimethicone, Stearoxy Dimethicone
and those you CAN'T wash out (except you use a shampoo that contains no silicons and a more or less aggressive tenside):
Cetearyl methicone, Cetyl Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Stearyl Dimethicone, Trimethylsilylamodimethicone
It really depends on YOUR hair type if you should use silicons or not.
I don't do it and my hair is much healthier than it was before.
BUT if you start using silicon free shampoos: Don't be suprised!! Your hair has to get used to it. Most hairtypes need 2 weeks to 2 months to get used to the "natural treatment".
I hope I could "help" some of you finding a new way of hair treatment or just gave some new information about silicons :)
Keep it growing
Neo
Thanks for the info Neo, as soon as I get my magnifying glass out I'll read the itty bitty print on the bottles.

My shampoo has 3 cones in it, one good and two not listed...hopefully not a bad one...although I don't mind these side effects. I know I may have split ends I cannot see but I do plan on trimming eventually anyway.
Thanks for this information Neo.

I used to use them so often I thought my hair loved them.
Went off of them a few weeks ago and my hair loves me for it. xD

My new shampoo and conditioner which I havent used for a long time yet, makes my hair feel and look much better but they contain many of the bad silicones. I don't know if I should use it any longer.
Hi Neo,
you have presented some fairly technical specific information that may have the potential for being useful, however whenever I find anything such as what you have written, given as facts on the internet, I become suspicious when these are not accompanied by some basis for them such as the citing of sources for the information. I'd like to know how you happened to come by what you have given us below. Thanks very much.
Hello,
I could give you the main link i got it from
http://www.lhpa.info
It's a mostly german site, but maybe google translation is able to translate it in an understable way.
You can also look at the longhaircommunity, they have topics like that too and you'll find these informations really fast there.
Neo
When I go to that web site address I get a blank page.
That's strange because it works for me
Strange...
I remember James had similar problems with german links, I don't know why.
I got to the site also. Could be that thier server goes off line from time to time

Interesting info, Neo. My shampoo doesn't have anything that ends with 'cone' so I shouldn't have any problems.
My conditioner, however has 'Amodimethicone' (neither good/bad) and 'Lauryl Methicone Copolyol' (good). Should I continue using it? Is it safe to continue? lol.
One of my sisters conditioner doesn't have ANY cones but she probably won't allow me to use it, which is why I am asking if it's okay to continue with my own conditoner. <_<
