This really upset me =(. Blondes dissapearing from the earth. They say that in 200 years the Blonde gene will be gone. This really sucks.
The article that almost made me cry
That _would_ suck. Earth would be a much less beautiful place if everyone has the same ethnic features everywhere.
I would take the article with a grain of salt, though. Extrapolating trends is a risky business. Plus there are plenty of folks, scientists included, who will make outrageous or unlikely statements in order to get their name in the news.
I had my own personal "blonde extinction." When I was a little kid I was as blonde as you are in your avatar pic- even more so, even, maybe. Then puberty hit and it got darker and darker and now it's very deep brown. I miss my blonde hair :(

It doesn't really bother me that much. I feel that a guy should have darker long hair. No offense, but blonde hair seems suited for children and is kind of feminine.
Tell that to Marco Hielta.
Each to their own, but I'm a long-haired blonde and think I look kind of masculine.
Hey, let's be nice, huh? Some people think curly hair is feminine. Some people think straight hair is feminine. Some people think any long hair is feminine. Hell, some people think British accents are feminine. But we all know such reactions are false, and although we may joke about them (e.g., blonde jokes), to say one to someone's face with a tone of seriousness is offensive. Also, the words "No offense, but" do not soften an offense, they sharpen it.
"You look like a girl" is a common slur tossed at longhairs, said not because it is believed, but because it offends. Let's tread lightly here, guys.
My 2¢
Bill
I'd forgotten about that, even though I've lived in the US for years, but it's just a hilarious concept.
If it comes to that, there are people in the North of England who think a Southern accent sounds feminine. OTOH, to us, their way of speaking sounds unrefined, and that's putting it politely.
People from the South of England just talk posher because we are better, LOL! I jest, but some people seem to think that I'm more intelligent based on the way I speak, so it's not all bad from my perspective.
People from a more refined culture usually have a more modulated way of speaking, and women in general also tend to speak more like that.
Can I point you in the direction of our very own Peg MI and has one the best heads of blonde longhair and well kept I've seen.
Cheers,
John.B
At least peroxide will still be around. :)
Blue eyes are also recessive, and I'd hate to see men with eyes like mine disappear. However, think about this:
If a blond and a darkhaired person with no recessive blond genes marry, the children will all have one blond gene and one darkhaired gene, although they will look darkhaired. If they mate with persons similar to themselves, 25% of the kids will have two darkhaired genes and 25% will have two blond genes. The other half will be like their parents - they will have one gene of each type. And half of the genes passed on will be blond ones.
So the number of blond genes will not decrease. As the world's population gets more intermixed, there will be more darkhaired people, but any time two people with blond genes mate, they will pass on those genes and some of their kids will get two blond genes and be blond.
So I would not worry about it Josh. We will always have beautiful blond people on Mother Earth.

This song will also make you cry. I remember it from my college days:
Irish Rovers - The Unicorn Song
Hi Bill, I have not heard that song in maybe 40 years. It sure
brings back memories.

Well, at least the last blonds will be here in Finland...
"They say that in 200 years the Blonde gene will be gone."
Hogwash.

Fear not the blond gene has been around for a long time it's not going anywhere.

I've got something to add to your depression: Redheads are also said to go extinct in 100 years :(
That's all because of dominant genes...Like me LOL
Interestingly, the number of redheads in my family seems to be increasing. My grandfather was a redhead. My mother, brother, and sister are redheads. One nephew and a few second cousins are redheads, too. Real redheads, not strawberry blonds. I used to be really blond when I was a kid, but it has darkened a lot and seems to change colors with the light.

Blame the mongol invasion of Western and Eastern Europe for that.
The problem is not mongols, it is mongrels.
Save the blonds! Ban interracial dating! [wink]
Bill
I really like blonde hair. Maybe mr hitler was a little bit right about that. Hehe. :P But I'm glad to be blonde. :)
That is true but is Ann Widdecombe a good reflection of people with "blonde from the bottle"!

Evolution and anthropology provide excellent examples of how the races have historically adapted to their respective environments; not excluding the force of mate selection and preferences... But, survival is impressive no matter whether from a masculine or feminine point of view... and each race, ethnic group is to be appreciated for what it is...
Bill's description of genetic distribution lets us know that the phenotype will reappear... but remember why blond/minimally pigmented hair, pale skin, etc. developed in the first place - as an adaptation to low UV light (& need for vit. D prod.), cold temps., etc., typically found in more extreme southern or northern latitudes, and often combined with sporadic famine. Although inuits and eskimos have dark hair, these ethnic groups likely moved into those regions more recently... My point is, provided humans are still around, if the climate changes in the future (perhaps after global warming runs its course...) or if famine occurs then only those individuals adapted to the locale will survive - people whose hair can catch the weakest rays of sunlight, whose skin will allow for sufficient vit. D production at that latitude, etc...
Inuits are uncharacteristically dark because they get a lot of vitamin D from their diet. And so, light skin is selected against.
This is an urban legend that (surprisingly) goes back until at least Civil War times.
