I have to say I love watching the Barrett- Jackson auto auction on speed channel but what I saw just now was a disgrace. They were auctioning a 2009 Corvette ZR1 where the proceeds were going to charity and at the apex of the bidding this guy on stage had his tail cut off if the bidding went to $1,000,000.To add insult to injury they said it would be donated to lock of love.GRRRRRRRR!!!It just happened so quickly I was in total shock. This guys hair was just about mid back from what I could tell.If any of you saw it I'd like to hear your take on it as Jay Leno was the scissor man.I think I need to get a drink!Mark
Eh, well a drink won't make it better....I guess some people simply place a different value on their hair or they get caught up in events such as this one and make mistakes. he's probably thinking today that he really screwed up.
After reading this, I am going to stop watching Jay Leno. I am
glad I did not see that show.
Scott
Hi Scott
Well I don't watch Leno anyway but after seeing this atrocity tonight I will not ever watch his show in the future. It was just weird how quickly this whole thing unfolded with this guy who is probably around 50 or so just went along with this whole thing as at first I thought he would back out.And the way Jay hacked his hair was brutal as he certainly was not gentle about it.As much as I liked watching the auction one has to look at the bidders and think these people don't know what the real world is like as they were throwing hundreds of thousands of dollars around like it was just pocket change. They certainly don't work for a living like the average joe does thats for sure.I also noticed Alice Cooper there later on but at least Jay didn't give him a haircut as I'm sure that would not fly.Oh well I guess some people don't place that much value on there longhair which makes you wonder why they bothered growing it long in the first place.
Mark
The guy was dumb for doing it. Especially for a Corvette.
Hair getting hacked of some idiot paying over a million for a Corvette. What can you do with a corvette. You can't tow a trailer with it or haul anything and it doesn't stand a chance against a Dodge Caravan or well tuned pickup truck in a race. I ain't making that up, do a google video search on a dodge caravan.
Re: the guy's ponytail.
I'm the guy's wife. His name is Gary Bennett. And no, he's not crazy.
People place different values on hair. He claims he's fine without it, and doesn't regret it for a minute. Jay had nothing to do with it - except being roped into being the scissor man.
Let me share some behind the scenes info: Gary's been in the car industry for a long time. In his professional opinion, he didnt think that the serial number 1 ZR-1 Corvette would bring over $750K at the auction; neither did the head of General Motors. When our friend Dave (who was ultimately the buyer of the car) heard Gary's remark a few days before the auction, he asked Gary if hed bet his ponytail on it bringing more than $750K. Gary said, sure, if I can give it to that kid's charity...but I doubt the car will bring that much.
Background info: Dave has more money than God, and is HUGE on giving to charities. Dave purposely upped his own bid to $1M, after he found out that ALL the money for the car was going to United Way. After he pledged $1M, he passed scissors to Jay Leno, saying he wanted the auction company to throw in Garys ponytail for the charity Locks of Love. Gary happily agreed. Jay hacked it off, and Dave then threw in an extra $10K cash to the Locks of Love charity, too.
Gary's an amazing man, and I love him dearly as a result of his kind actions...this is really small when you consider some of his other random, anonymous acts of kindness. He looks at it this way: Imagine being a kid with cancer, and then losing your hair to chemo. Heck, imagine beig a child and NEVER having any hair because you've spent your whole childhood life fighting cancer.
Hair's great, but he'll grow it back, and he'd rather some child benefit from it....doesn't a child need the self-esteem more than Gary? I suspect so. And I commend him for it.
The president of General Motors was in attendance to watch the car sell, and he completely freaked out. He estimated the car would bring $500,000 at best. Hes dubbed Garys hair the million dollar ponytail.
So, my friends, pause and think that maybe there's more to the story than you think. Gary's helping promote more long-haired folks out there, and it was purely his decision. I simply held the ponytail straight as Jay hacked at it in the name of a good cause.
Keep farmin' those million dollar ponytails, my friends.....God bless you all!
Peace,
Audra

It is well known that Locks of Love are a sham and a very small percentage of hair is used. But hey, a bet is a bet.
Hmmmm, too bad guys with such detailed interests, large amounts of excess money and big hearts don't do more research on the charities they donate to.
