My hair feels itchy when it's on my neck in a ponytail under a hat. Is healthy hair supposed to feel itchy?
I found that when the weathe was such that I was going to sweat a lot, I got more itchy. During DC summers, a rinse after walking home from work was mandatory, and washing every other day was advisable.
Keeping your hair under a hat could make you sweat more, or the itching could be caused by hair ends coming back around, or it could just be that whole "bending it the wrong way" thing.
When the sweat drives out, it leaves behind little salt crystals, which are irritating. At least, that's my theory. Also, the moisture can cause normal dead skin to stick to your scalp, and breed bacteria which are irritating.
A few lucky people on this board have very strong natural secretions which prevent this process, and can get away with a shampoo-less rinse and nothing more.
Under ideal climactic conditions such as this weeks cool rainy weather (almost zero sweat) I can go a week without washing, but that's it.
I'm not sweating when I feel hair on my neck that makes my neck itch since that's where my hair ends are if it's in a ponytail. I was wondering if my hair ends would feel itchy if my hair wasn't so dry and damaged.

Do you lift your mane and wash underneath it, I mean wash the skin of your shoulders and lower neck? Hair can act like a thatched roof and shed water right off it, and your skin underneath can end up unwashed. That will itch.
The front side of the neck and upper torso can have the same problem for those of us who have long beards. You have to lift your hair, even if you are not washing it at the moment, and wash underneath it.
