GREETINGS!! I have a dilemma and need advice from the hyperboard community. Ive been growing my hair out for around 10 or 11 months. Its now down to the bottom of my ear lobes in the front and a few inches longer than that in the back. I had an undercut / undershave (whatever you choose to call it) for approx 10 years. I was forced to cut my hair around 5 years ago when I decided to join the military. Now that my time is over I decided to grow my hair back long. Aside from wanting my hair to be AT LEAST shoulder length (it used to be to the middle of my back), I just cant decide what to do with it. I cant decide if I want to let it all grow out or just grow out the the top and undershave the sides and back. I LOVED the undershave when I had it. Ive always thought that look was VERY cool and different. And my hair is VERY VERY thick and heavy so with the undershave I always had the look of long hair, but it was very easy to take care of and felt very light. BUT (here is the dillema)...Im pushing 30 now. Im not a kid anymore and cant get away with wearing some of the same stuff I used to without looking foolish, and I dont want my hair to look foolish. And I now have a job with a very professional and high class technology company. Long hair is allowed (there are several guys in the company that have long hair, including a very high up dept. manager) but Im afraid the undershave might be a little too extreme of a hair style when it comes time to try to advance within the company. What do you guys think? Should I go with an undershave? (I cant stress how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE the look) or just grow it all out so it looks more conservative? I have been going back and forth on this for months and just dont know what to do.
Hello ! And welcome of course ;)
In my opinion, the undershave isn't too extrem. After all, it's just another hairstyle for longhair. I've seen some men with this hairstyle, and they look as "professional" as anyone. So, if it please you, why not ? (Even if, personaly, I always prefer a full head of hair :D)
Bye

Thanks for all the quick and positive responses, everyone! If I get any more positive responses then the undershave/undercut is 100% going to happen. To answer the question of how I used to wear it years ago, I had the sides and back cut once a week with a #2. Just go to WWE.com or google pics of WWE wrestlers Matt Hardy and/or Jeff Hardy and thats how I used to wear it and want to wear it again. Like I said: Im just afraid of someone in the workplace not wanting to promote me or hire me to work in another division of the company based on my hair. Regular long hair in the work place can be "controversial" as it is (if I dont get the undershave I will just grow it all out). Just dont want to screw up my chances of advancing with this GREAT company. Ive worked here almost a year and definately want to work here for as long as I can, if not until I retire. Thanks again everyone for the imput.
Hey, I think it is a pretty cool style as well. I'd say just grow your hair out all one length for a while and then decide later on. If there's one thing you have, its time to choose what really suits you best. If things don't work out down the road, then it'll just grow back eventually (which it sounds like you know about all too well!).
Peace,
Ryan
I've always wanted that look also and since you've had it cut like that in the past how extreme are we talking about on the sides and the back? Are you talking of taking it down to a #2 or 4 on the sides and back and how far up do you plan on going with the undercut? I would also like to ask you at what phase of growing do you think one could go ahead with a cut like this, I'm at about 4" of growth and my hair is very wavey and of course I'm into that dreaded awkward phase and deciding if it's not to early to start with this style or should I let it get more length to it? I'm a little older than you, OK I'm pushing late 40's but I say as long as it's taken care of you should be able to wear your hair in the style of choice.
I just had to mention that I got a good laugh out of the notion of hair to mid back being the "conservative" look!
Personally I don't like undercuts, but it's your hair; do what you want.

Well, you did mention that you used to wear this style a lot. How about trying something different? You should let it all grow in evenly to a pretty long length and then decide whether to go with the undercut. You may find yourself to like it much more than the undercut. I used to have an undercut, but I prefer my hair as it is now, all at the same length. I say give it a shot! Good luck.
At the end of the day is your hair and if liked so much go for it and if you are not sure then don't. Perhaps leave to grow to the length you like before doing it. I have thick hair but I'm not that bothered about an undercut. There is nothing wrong with thick and I'm used to dealing with.
Good luck what ever you decided and don't make a decision on just our opinions here.
Cheers,
John.B
I don't know if this will help or not but I've had an undercut
or undershave for several years now and I too love it. I work
as a civil engineer which is a fairly conservative business.
Also my teenage years are long gone but I haven't had any
negative comments. With my hair tied back it makes me look
neater. The thing I think is not to go too extreme. that is
not to cut it too high. Mine is only about 1 1/2" or so above
my ears. Cut too high and it starts looking like a mohawk.
Anyway my experience has been positive even though I'm not that
young anymore. But I should also say I've always been very
independant and don't care what others think about me.
