Hiya! So, I'm growing my hair out and now it's about 3-4 inches long... Anyways, my hair is naturally curly/wavy (big curls), so the back of my hair has mostly curled up and not been a problem, until recently.
The problem is that it's starting to look like a mullet. Granted, the front of my hair is obviously not short (below my nose if I pull it straight), but I can't bring myself to have anything mildly resembling a mullet.
From your experience, would it hurt me to trim the back, while I let the rest of my hair grow out? It seems that this would work fairly well, but I've never had long hair so I'm not sure.
Thanks so much for your time!
I'm interested too in others' thoughts on this since I'm basically in the same stage of growth. I've been thinking of cutting just the growth that covers the back of my neck maybe an inch or two.

Well, I had the same problem. I had been teased about having a mullet for awile and I refused to cut it and it just eventually disapeared as my hair got longer. Do what you wish but I think it will dissapear like mine did as more growth takes place.
Everyone correct me if I'm wrong...but, I've heard that EVERYONE'S hair grows faster in the back of their head than in the front. I know it was that way for me too.
If I were you, I'd just let it ride. Don't fixate so much on any "look". If you're embarrassed because you think it looks like a mullet, then everyone will think it looks like a mullet.
Let it ride.......

As far as I know, the hair on the back of the head grows at the same rate as the rest of it. The hair at the back just "looks" longer, because it's starting out lower than the hair in front.

I have the same type and length of hair that you have and I think that the curls and big waves help to hide that fact that the back is longer. If your hair was straight I would think it would be more of an issue. I say let it grow and maybe put a little more product on the back to help the curl and waves stay tight throughout the day so it appears shorter than it actually is and more at the same length like the rest of your hair.
Hope this helped, Woodman
If the hair at the front AND on top isn't trimmed short, then it isn't a mullet.
It is very normal for mid-length hair to be a lot shorter at the front, because as Validus pointed out, the hair at the back is starting from much lower down, as hair grows all over the back of the head but not all over the front. Of course you have eyebrows, eyelashes, moustache hair, beard hair and even nose hair, LOL! However, none of those grows the same as head hair.
My guess is that there are kids out there winding people up by telling them they have a mullet, but that none of them are even old enough to have ever seen anyone with a mullet. OK, I know there are a few still around, but they aren't very common.
If you doubt what I say, there are web sites dedicated to mullets. Try putting "mullet" into a search engine and take a look at some mullets. Then come back and tell me that short hair growing out looks like a mullet - except it doesn't!
I did just that when my hair started to enter the awkward phase. I had several people warn me to get trims because I'd have a mullet otherwise. I googled the term, saw the pictures, and decided I was okay. "Mulletish" for a few months perhaps, but nothing like a true mullet. :-)
