I'm all the suddenly having urges to cut my hair. Please persuade me not to. I feel really freaked about it all the suddenly, because just a few days ago I was so excited when I got my first full ponytail.
gee, you made it past the worst part.
Over at LHC, we swear by the two-week rule.
Urges usually pass. REALLY think about it: do you want long hair? Do you have a compelling reason (not excuse) to cut? Do you really want to start all over again?
If you did cut would you only start growing again?
Longhairs are endurance athletes.
Being a longhair is not about how one feels today or tomorrow, but rather how one feels over the course of several years. Some longhairs have even crossed the decade marker.
Give it some time.

14 years and counting.
35 years since I first grew mine out, 27 years since I grew it beyond my shoulders, and even 4 years since my last haircut - and it still not as long as EdG's !!!!
I agree totally here. To grow your hair long, you have to be in it for the long haul. I started in 1992 and never looked back and my hair is well over 3 feet in length now. See photo.

Is that your terminal length? It is impressive, but you'd think it'd reach the floor and beyond after 16 years.
Give it some time.
Think about it as relevant to your time growing. Think of how long you've been growing it and then think about how long it'll take you to cut it, so give it a lot of time...
I hope that made sense. In any case, it'd be sad to see someone with such awesome hair chop it all off, though I doubt you'd look bad short.
Always give it the 2 week rule. That means if you CONTINUOUSLY feel that long hair is not for you, then I guess you have to follow your heart. I cut may hair in 2000 because I got that same sudden urge and acted immediately on that urge. It wasn't long before I regretted that move and was longing for long hair again. I didn't start my return to long hair until 2 years ago due to pressures around me. It's easier to have long hair than to begin the journey.
Hang in there Bill!

Don't cut it, your hair is looking really great and it fit you really well !
Instead you can try a new look, why not wearing a ponytail ? or a half tail ?

I am very new to this board but this urge to the hair is all to familiar to me. I have tried to grow my hair out a few other, but then sure enough I got to a part of the awkward stage that I really hated and then buzzed it all off again.
And to be honest I have buzzed my hair off only to feel remorse and wondering where I could have gone with my hair. About two weeks ago I had a sudden urge to cut my hair, so I decided to do the two week rule. About three days into not liking my hair I made my own rule up. Keep in mind now that I am cheep with hair cuts and will buzz it at home then go it it cut somewhere. Well the rule I made was that I had to go and get it cut at a salon, and that I would go with a 3 or so inches left if I was to cut my hair. I gave on of my good friends my buzzer to keep so that there would be no temptation for me.
About half way through the two weeks I found that I really liked the idea of where my hair can go and that if I stick it for the full 20 months which is about where I want to go for my first goal. I hope to grow it longer then what the length is for 20 months, but having that goal in mind helps me when I want to cut my hair.
I hope that my ramblings of my own times that I was weak and wanted to cut my hair helps you in yours.
Take care, and hopefully happy growing :)

NOOOO!!!
remember the two-week rule!
Don't do it! I cut all my hair off a year ago. But luckily it's back to the length it was, just in better condition.
I had an urge to cut mine a year ago, because of a good short hairstyle I saw someone with. I was horrified to find out I couldn't pull off the look, the hair just wouldn't go right, and I'm far too busy to keep maintaining gel/wax in my short hair. A few days later, after kidding myself that my short hair was better, I longed for my hair back. So a year later, it's back, and I couldn't be happier.
Use the 2 week rule, I didn't and I totally regretted it.
PS. your hair is awesome!

I'll be around with the electrodes and a couple car batteries
and we'll work out those urges your having in the most persuasive
way I can imagine.
How about Wednesday?

Bill S., I had the same experience not long ago myself. For some reason I had a very strong urge to chop my hair. I don't know what caused it, but all of a sudden all I could see was what was wrong with my hair.
Like you, I reached out publicly for support, because I knew that cutting without thinking is always a disaster.
Everyone urged me to stick to the 2-week rule, and I'm very happy that I did. Now it's several weeks later, and I may just be happier with my hair than I've ever been.
It's funny how our emotions play tricks on us from time to time.
Please remember the 2-week rule Bill, and no emotional cutting!

I think you'll be sorry if u do cut it. I cut mine back in 1995 after 5 years of growth (I cut it for a job I never got after college) and was sorry I had for years. Finally in 2000 I started growing it out again and will NEVER do that again.

You'll definitely regret it. Think about it very deeply for two weeks, and if ever once a doubt crosses your mind, don't do it.
Long hair suits you well, so why go back to short hair? Everyone has short hair, so be different and be yourself. Long hair adds character.
Just stick with it and you won't regret it. However, if after a few weeks you're absolutely certain long hair is not for you, go ahead and chop it off. Long hair is not for everybody-- you'll know deep in your heart if you truly want long hair.
Chances are if you even grew it out this much, you are a true long hair and should not look back!
Hi Bill,
I just saw your recent update, and it was awesome, your hair is coming along very well indeed, and congatulations on the tail! Whatever you do, don't give in to the temptation of the evil scissors. Give it the two week rule, or even better, the two month rule.
I had long hair in the past, and it was at around my current length before cutting it in 1999. I had short hair for several years, and when I started to grow it back again in 2004, regretted cutting it earlier, since it takes a LONG time to grow it. I have vowed never to go back to short hair again.
Keep it growing,
David
First, hide scissors, anything you could use to cut your hair, hide them away! Make them as difficult and hard to get to as possible. And wait it out, at least 2 weeks. You have made such progress, don't give in to the urge to cut.

Do what YOU want to do, not what people on a website tell you you should.
