Hi there,
Well I don't know about anyone else but it's a special day today as it's Shrove Tuesday or pancake day here in the UK. Yum yum lots of pancakes. So whatever is going on in the world today, perhaps the old sofa and Ron Paul will pop around for some!
Cheers,

Well it's not a national holiday or anything but just makes the start of lent and Elektros gave a very good explanation of that is his post.
Congratulations of the first day of the rest of you life and you can do anything and no boss to worry about and I'm sure you have plenty to keep you occupied.

"...Congratulations of the first day of the rest of your life..."
Thanks.....I have been fortunate to have put more in my life so far than most do in a dozen lifetimes....feels like I am off for another "great adventure".
Walter
Congratulations, Walter, and welcome to "The Endless Summer"!
School is out, FOREVER!
Look us up if you get up this way, and we'll do the same if our travels get us down there.

Thanks Bill;
The plan is to spend most of the year here, but the three hot months sailing Puget Sound.....should be passing your way a couple of times a year.
Walter
Congratulations Walter on your retirement, so throw another pancake on your plate and start enjoying your retirement.
Kevin
...so throw another pancake on your plate and start enjoying your retirement...
Thanks Kevin !!
Day 1 consisted of pancakes and naps !
Hi John:
It's Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) here, with parades, etc., especially in New Orleans. It's the day to splurge and fatten up before lent starts!
Shrove Tuesday and Mardi Gras are the same thing, just a slight difference between just eating pancakes versus throwing parades, etc.
When my wife went through her Christian phase we used to go to an Episcopalian church, which is basically the US branch of the Church of England, and they had a pancake supper at the church every Shrove Tuesday.
However, the pancakes they served were the thick American style ones served with maple syrup, whereas the pancakes eaten to celebrate Shrove Tuesday in England are thin crepes (which are of course the French version of pancakes) and are always served with sugar and lemon juice, at least that's what everyone I know has. Somehow that detail didn't make it across the Atlantic.
To be really pedantic, the Episcopal Church USA and the Church of England are both part of the Anglican Communion, but the Archbishop of Canterbury leads both the C of E and the whole Anglican Communion, and Anglican churches in countries other than England are each lead by a Presiding Bishop.
Some churches in the US have broken away from the Episcopal church because it has ordained women and gays and they don't approve of that, and are calling themselves Anglican, which is downright misleading IMHO, maybe deliberately so.
OTOH, the Anglican Communion got upset when the Episcopalians ordained an openly gay bishop, and so they agreed on a moratorium, i.e. they agreed not to ordain any more gay bishops for the time being, but AFAIK they are still ordaining gay vicars (i.e. priests).
I am an atheist, but C of E is the established religion in England, and there is a law that schools must have a religious service every morning. When I was a young kid it was C of E, although lead by a teacher not a vicar, but by the time I left school they had realised that the law didn't specify any particular religion, and on any particular day it could be Hare Krishna or Buddhist or anything. I have a wide knowledge of religions, LOL!
<3 PANCAKES! =D Now I have an excuse to make Quinoa pancakes again!
*munch munch*
Tristram
Yum yum they sound nice and I've just eaten 5 pancakes and now I'm full.
Cheers,

Upon reading your post, we just decided voting can wait. We are going to whip up a big platter of Old England shroves and slather 'em with New England maple syrup! Larry's from New Hampshire, and any excuse to eat pancakes with maple syrup is always welcome. You might have even started a new tradition in this household, to have pancakes for breakfast on election days before going to vote!
Bill
Hi Bill,
Well whatever voting thing is going on today is always important to have a good breakfast and enjoy some great pancakes. We tend to eat them for pudding over here. True it's very nice to enjoy them with the old canadian maple syrup but we tend just to have them with lemon and sugar and that's the way I like them.
Mind you I don't need a special day or an event to make then and always nice when friends and visit and they enjoy them to.
So here's a nice big plateful later.
Cheers,
John.B
I made baked doughnuts in my doughnut maker last night. Gave some to my mom. German and Amish and Mennonites traditionally feast on doughnuts (or donuts) the last day before lent. I'll have the laswt of them before bed tonight.
