I've been scheduled to attend a week long training course in San Francisco toward the end of the month. If the city lives up to its liberal reputation, I expect that my mane will have a lot of company. I typically hide my mane and roll/pin up the goatee/sidebrns due to our conservative management and supervisory staff. In this case, I'm tempted to put beads in my face fur and wear my mane long and free for the entire week!
You will find longhairs with a large variety of "looks" here in San Francisco. Just about anything will play fine on the streets. While at your conference, you may find expectations varying from "anything goes" to "very conservative", depending on your field. Who might see you, or whether you intend to network with others, may also play a part in your decision as to how to look.
Longhairs will be less numerous downtown, and those you see there will be less outlandish. Out in the neighborhoods, you'll find that some neighborhoods have more longhairs than others. The Haight, SoMa, and the Inner Mission have the most longhairs, but longhairs are nevertheless a minority of men.
If you really want to take on the hippie look, you'll find others who look that way in the Haight more than anywhere else, but there are a lot of dirty druggie types to be found over there, and they'll be part of your company.
There are several MLHH guys in the area, and if you are interested, you can surely meet up with some of us while you are here.
Bill in San Francisco
After seeing the instructor roster for the training course, I'll probably have to forgo the beading session. I'll probably even roll up the face fur during the day, but the mane will most definitely be flying. I hadn't given much consideration to meeting anyone from the MLHH, but it would be more enjoyable to have someone to walk around with. Otherwise, I'm going to be wandering around anyway - all by myself. I need to figure out San Francisco's very confusing public transit system to be able to figure out how to get anywhere. Otherwise, I'll be stranded either at the airport, or at the training site on Rockaway Beach all week.
You've got it - in the middle of nowhere! Actually, Pacifica is only 11 miles from downtown, but it seems much further when you're there. I had a training course in the same location a few years ago. As usual, there was limited time for sightseeing, but I did make it to Amoeba music and Fisherman's Wharf. Thanks for the transit info. I had already found the same website, but didn't know which one of the 25 bus lines to check! I'll probably move to a motel near the airport when the training is over to make getting around town a bit easier. There isn't much point even coming to Pacifica, because I won't have much time until the training is over. This would be at the very end of the month, running into early March.
Try to find a motel convenient to BART (the subway)...that will make things much easier.
Keep us posted with your plans...you'll probably have to repost the thread since stuff times off of the board in less than a week these days.
I for one am not too hard to locate...I operate historic streetcars along the waterfront from the Ferry Building to Fisherman's Wharf.
Actually, the entire trip is now in question. I've just been deployed to assist with emergency operations in Arkansas for the recent tornado outbreak. Since my anticipated deployment is 30 days, someone else will probably get my training slot instead. Pacifica is one of our routine training locations, so there might be another opportunity in the future.
As Bill said it's a very longhair friendly place and I'm sure they would organise a meeting and make you welcome. When I was there a few years ago I met quite a few people for a brunch on a Sunday and they made me most welcome.
Cheers,
John.B
Weather permitting, it would be cool to meet you. Maybe you me and Bill on a dry day.
Wearing your hair down and putting beads in your facial fur should not be a problem. Keep the nose ring in too while you are at it.
