Hey guys,I decided to start growing my hair out 5 months ago.The problem is that I have thick Italian hair. I guess I'm in the "awkward" stage right now.I know it's called that for a reason but it just seems that it isn't going to look right when it grows out. Did anyone else feel this way? It's just thick and poofy. Will this pass or do some people not have the right type of hair to grow long.Am I thinking about this too much? Just from reading the threads on this site for the past month I knows you guys are extremely helpful.Any advice?
Be patient! I know you think it looks bad now and you may have folks tell you that it's time for a haircut, but yes indeed, it does get better! Don't you believe the bullcrap that people will feed to you "There are some people who aren't meant to have long hair" Bullcrap! Listen to your heart. If you feel you want long hair, you'll find a way.
btw, Welcome!
Bruce
hey there bro im part Italian as well i have really thick and dark hair like you do, dont worry once it gets longer itll get evened out and look awesome, just ware a hat or something until it gets long dude thats what i did hope this helps!
Hey there, I too have Italian hair, being half-Italian myself. Curly, thick, etc. I started growing it out almost a year ago and I'm pleased with the progress. At first it was pain in the neck and I had to get used to seeing my hair turn into a monster in the morning after waking up.
Fortunately, we live in the age of regular showering, shampooing, conditioning, and hair products.
Key is to experiment with different products, you'll find some are great for your hair, others don't do great. But don't overdo it, cuz Italian hair require a delicate touch.
Comb your hair to help with shedding, but do it when your hair is wet and conditioned or otherwise only brush your hair dry when nobody else will see it, like at nighttime.
I promise you, at first, your hair will look poofy and nutty, but as time goes on and it gets longer, it will become much more manageable and fine looking. Key is patience, patience, and a sense of humor about how your hair always seems to have a mind of its own.
"Thick and poofy" is typical of the awkward phase. It'll pass.
Not sure which end of the gene pool I got my hair from, but I am 1/4 Italian, and this is what my hair once looked like at 15 months of growth.

Hey
I think I know what you're talking about. I live to the South of Italy (Mediterranean Sea) and I have very thick hair :P. I don't know if it's "Italian" hair as such; I don't think I'm genetically Italian... The point is, thick hair is a disaster in the awkward stage! I've been growing my hair for 7 and a half months so far and it's thick and curly and sticks out at all angles, giving me a tamed afro haha.
I don't believe if I grow it out that it will look bad because I think it's a part of my character so it's bound to look good somehow (of course if it's taken care of). I've seen a lot of long hair types, from straight, thin hair to very thick, very curly hair... I'm sure yours is bound to be closer to the thick one... Thick hair looks quite good when long actually :).
I hope that helped.
And don't worry, awkward stage also has its good and bad days, one day your hair would look like a big poofy mess, the next day it's shiny and a totally different shape. It just takes patience to outgrow it :)
Italian, just let it grow bro! I started growing from bald, and am at 11 months now. It is just now starting to try to lay flat instead of poofing out when it air dries. I really feel like I am in the last stages of "awkward" I hope this helps a bit. It is a long journey and I had many days that I had to wear a hat or beanie to keep from looking like Bozo the clown!
peace, Brian
