Hey guys! I haven't cut my hair in over 6 years and Locks of Love is coming to my college campus on Valentine's Day. I am a bit unsure if I want to cut my hair or not, but I do want to help the kids though. Any ideas on what I should do?
locks of love doesn't use the majority of the hair they get. so you might as well keep it.
If you're going to cut your hair, don't do it for those scam artists.
Here's what our own Reverend Erik has to say about Locks of Love:
"Locks of Love only uses about 3% of the hair donated for wigs. The rest is either sold for profit or "disposed of". Grey hair or hair less than 10" is sold by them. Girls under 6 receive synthetic hairpieces. Locks of Love cannot link donors to recipients. Long hair is considered by them to be only for girls because as they put it, "it is socially acceptable for young men to have short, shaved, or even no hair". They only make a small number of wigs a year and often charge the families they are "donating" them to. As a charity bringing in over $250k they are required to make a public accounting for their activity on request but don't. Much of this info is from their own website.
Donating your hair because you were bullied into it is wrong and only shows low self-esteem. This is really becoming an irritation for people with long hair who have to put up with numerous comments from strangers and even people they know telling them that they are selfish (when they are not!) just for wearing their natural hair at the length that they want!
Help others with their esteem by lowering yours? What does that accomplish?"
Thanks for the advice, I'll reconsider my decision now that I know that they are scammers.
Amen to that bro!
Give them $5 and tell where to go! Silly idea to capitulate to the sort of pressure these occasions bring.

I agree with the others...Just say no!! If you want to help kids with cancer then make a nice donation to the American Cancer Society (assuming you're in the USA), or any charity of your choice that is concerned with helping kids suffering from disease. (The Make a Wish Foundation is another)

If you really want to do something like this, I suggest you go to a cancer hospital and find a little girl who wants a wig. Then find a reputable wig maker who will donate his time and efforts if you donate your hair.
Skip the "middle (not so reputable) man" and go right to a person who needs the hair.
Why not keep growing your hair and if you really want to help out a cancer charity then make a donation. As someone that is suffering from a cancer infection I've started raising money for Cancer Research UK and I'm also in the planning stages of planning a walk up Machu Picchu in the next couple of years to raise money for charity and you don't have loose you hair to that so called charity!
From the pic you hair is looking great and worth keeping I reckon.
Cheers,

Hi Big C Fatman,
The best thing I can say is to ignore anything to do with the Locks of Love. Only about 10% of the hair given to them is used for wigs for people who have cancer, and the remaining 90% is simply thrown out in the trash. Do you REALLY want that to happen to six years of growth?
If you really want to help the cause of cancer, a financial donation to a worthwhile charity is FAR more valuable.
Hope this helps,
David
Give a financial donation to cancer sufferers and keep your hair.
Yes! Yes! This says it all!. Locks of Love will only end up destroying your donation and who knows if the people who really need it will be the recieptients of your generosity!
peace, jonalbear
Locks of love is a scam.
I agree with everyone else. Don't do it. There is a lot of documentation on the net to show what a scam it really is.
There are better ways to help out with the fight against cancer.
Don't let anyone make you feel guilty, either.
Good luck.

Don't do Locks of Love. If you absolutely must support a cause then you can actually sell your hair (I think a decent portion of hair cut places will actually buy hair) and donate the money. Your hair will be used by someone and your money will go to a good cause...which may turn around and buy hair from a hair cut place. And so, in this case, you have provided hair for someone in need, albeit indirectly.
Of course, you can keep your hair and donate money from your pocket as well.
Send them a check !Keep your Hair,
Along with not giving them a part of your body which you must like enough to have grown it, DON'T give them money either...THEY certainly don't need it.
Cancer research would do better with donations...though governments and large private donors make more of a difference in that department.
