I'm confused about getting trims. I've read somewhere that you don't need to get any at all when your growing your hair out, and I've also more commonly read it's best to get 1/4 inch trims every couple of months. Recently I asked for a 1/4 inch trim and the stupid lady cut almost around 2 inches off ("Is that short enough, sweetie?"). I was really upset because my hair isn't that long to begin with. Anyway I could've made a lot more progress in the last 8 months if it weren't for these dumb trims. So what is everyone's experiences with getting trims? I don't want to get split ends, but I've had so many bad experiences I'm about to just say screw it and let my hair grow nonstop for a year.
A rule of thumb: Don't trim, cut, or do anything to your hair until it's the length you want it.
Sounds like a good plan!

I try to cut off any split ends that I see and then get trims when my hair needs evening out, as it does when first growing out. It's usually only once a year trims.
I´ve been growing for over 15 months and I´ve had 2 trims. Both of them were in the back to get rid of the mullet. Though, now it looks okay so I´ll probably wait until late autumn this year to get a final trim to achieve the best long look.
There is no reason to trim your hair except that it will make the ends look less "raggedy".
I haven't trimmed mine at all in 20 years.
Hey Lasivian, that's some fabulous hair you've got there!
I've got a few inches less in length, but I'll get there, soon!
WOW!!!
your hair looks fabulous!!
Well, basically don't worry about trims too much in the growing process... i mean a trim once in a while wont hurt (like a half inch)just to keep things even. But really all you need to do is take care of it and be gentle, and everything will even out in the end, and of course LOTS of conditioner always helps lol
But yeah don't worry about trims too much...it will only keep you from your goal length. When you reach your goal length you can get a trim every so often to keep it at the same length but do not worry about it during the growing process, unless you feel it is absolutely necessary (but don't be too critical).
That is about all the advice I can give and I feel that pretty much sums it up. Keep it growing! :)

That's the advice I always give: forget about it, don't watch it, don't think about it and don't trim. One day you will pass by a mirror and say, OMG, is it that long already?
(This happened to me, more or less, after quitting years of mid-length)
Little wonder from all of the opinions floating around out there.
My opinion only: It is best when growing your hair out that you leave it untouched for at least two years so that you can gain length the fastest of all. After that, depending on how your hair is doing a slight trim may well be in order or it may not.
It has always caused me great wonderment when I hear people say that the hair must be cut so that it will grow longer. Wow........is ther EVER alot of money involved with that one and the statement is absolutely false.
Now that I know where terminal length is for myself, every 3 or 4 months I go in for just a maintaince trim so as to make the snags and knots problem almost nil. I had stated before on this board that my hair is to remain at waist lenght.........but now that term has been defined so my hair is far below waist. It would be belt length in my case.
As others have said trimming or cutting will not make your hair grow faster. In my opinion, there are only three reasons to trim.
1. I personally don't like the appearance of a ragged hemline, and would trim so most of the ends are even, but that is ONLY *MY* opinion, and what *I* would do on *MY OWN HAIR*.
2. You know that anything longer than a certain point wouldn't work with the rest of your lifestyle, and you want to keep it roughly waist, classic, or at whatever point.
3. As your hair gets longer, there is more potential for damage from various sources: previous chemical treatments, open flames, machinery, car doors, obnoxious free-range toddlers in a store, etc. Should you experience damage, you might want to cut out the damage area and probably trim to blend the ends.
I have not gotten any trims whatsoever. I think my hair looks fine. I've asked the Hyperboard a few times about it and they say just to let it grow to your goal length, then modify.
Well Ive been growing my hair since end of October 2004 and I havent had any cuts what so ever but everyone is different though id say dont have any unless you do have split ends but this is my own opinion not everyone elses opinion
